Sometimes what we see is only the tip of the iceberg.

School anxiety can show itself through morning resistance, irritability, headaches, stomachaches, clinginess, meltdowns, withdrawal or dysregulation.

But behaviour is information.

Underneath may be sensory overload, learning struggles, social difficulties, separation anxiety, bullying, executive function demands, transitions, low self-esteem, family stress or simply feeling that school is too much to manage right now.

The important question isn’t only “How do we get them into school?”

It is also:

“What is making school feel so difficult for this child?”

When we understand what sits underneath the anxiety, we are in a much better position to support the child — ideally before anxiety progresses into significant difficulties with attendance.

The work never stops—even when we’re at conference! 😂 📞

Judge Cowan, Judge Cox, and I had a great time at the Tennessee Juvenile & Family Court Conference, learning from child welfare professionals from across the state.

We're bringing home some good ideas, enjoyed meaningful fellowship, and maybe answered a few important calls along the way. 😂 These rotary dial phones actually work.

Grateful for the opportunity to serve Tennessee’s children and families alongside some great judges. ⚖️

Dolly once said, “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.”

At CASA, we believe in showing up for children who need someone in their corner—offering hope, encouragement, and the consistent support that can make all the difference. Dolly’s lifelong example of compassion reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness can bring light to someone’s life.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the generosity, and the love you gave so freely. Your light will continue to shine through the countless lives you touched. 💗✨

Rest in peace, Dolly. We will always love you. 🤍

Neural Nugget: Between 0–3 years old, a child’s brain forms over 1 million neural connections per second. This time in life is the most pivotal, and also the most vulnerable for brain development. Early experiences shape cognitive development in early childhood.

We’ve made the science of baby brain development accessible for all. The Baby Brain Map is your interactive guide to early brain science. Start exploring now and help lay the foundation for healthy growth: https://bit.ly/4w3j4jg

If your child struggles to focus, switches quickly between activities, or seems 'hooked' on screens… you’re not imagining it.

But it’s also not as simple as screens 'damaging' attention.

The research shows something more nuanced — screens can shape what the brain expects, especially when content is fast, stimulating, and constant.

This doesn’t mean you need to remove screens completely. It means understanding how they affect attention, and how to create balance that actually supports your child’s development.

This post breaks it down clearly, with practical strategies you can use straight away.
