Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at OHSU are passionate about safe, quality patient care and educating the healthcare workforce. Late last year they ratified their first contract which included groundbreaking workload protections - but OHSU is already backing out of the agreement.

On Friday, May 29, almost 100 APPs and their supporters gathered near the OHSU Waterfront campus for a rally, demanding the university cease and desist implementation of across-the-board workload and schedule changes. The changes were pushed through without union collaboration. Administrators claim the changes will increase patient access but APPs worry about growing caseloads; resulting in rushed appointments with less time for each patient.

ONA believes that OHSU is legally required to bargain over these changes and is not allowed to unilaterally implement them. APPs are ready to work collaboratively on solutions that will protect patients and give providers the necessary time to manage complex cases and stay up to date on the latest medical advances.

⏰ LAST CHANCE ⏰
We only have until the end of tomorrow (May 30) to help our Providence Home Health and Hospice/Benedictine union siblings! Write to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to persuade them to impose reasonable and enforceable conditions on the new joint venture (JV) between Providence and for-profit home health provider, Compassus. Among many concerns, the OHA's recent proposed order threatens the quality care that our patients deserve by allowing rapid service area and clinician cuts.

Just as healthcare professionals advocate for the care of patients, our elected representatives advocate for our communities. Today, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Congresswoman Andrea Salinas saw firsthand the challenges facing frontline workers and patients at OHSU. ONA members took them on tours of the emergency room and NICU to see firsthand how overcrowding in both departments is impacting families and pateints.

The nurses are bargaining a new contract and want OHSU management to work with them to develop and execute concrete solutions to improve patient experience and staff working conditions.

🩺Safe Staffing: Join a forum on May 28 or June 18 to learn about changes to the law

As we approach the final phase of Oregon’s hospital staffing law implementation on July 1, 2026 — when med-surg nurse-to-patient ratios are scheduled to move from 1:5 to 1:4 — we want to provide an important update on what the law requires, how hospitals are attempting to undermine it, and how we can continue fighting for safe staffing across the state.

Join one of two upcoming virtual staffing forums to learn what the law requires, how hospitals are attempting to weaken it, and what nurse staffing committees can do to help enforce safe staffing standards statewide.

In healthcare settings communication is key and language should never be a barrier for care. Translators help patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, medications, and rights.

Recently, a Colorado hospital developed a program that trained dozens of qualified staff members as interpreters. Since launching the program, the hospital has seen a 50% increase in Spanish-speaking patients while also reducing costs, even after accounting for training and pay differentials.

The Oregon Nurses Association applauds Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield for joining the lawsuit challenging a U.S. Department of Education rule that restricts access to federal student loans for healthcare workers pursuing professional degree programs.

ONA members have been clear: this harmful rule from the Trump administration would create significant barriers for frontline healthcare workers—including nurses, physician associates, therapists, and others—seeking advanced education and training, especially those from lower-income households and historically underrepresented communities. It would discourage many from advancing their education and force others to rely on higher-interest, higher-risk private loans.

For generations, healthcare professions—particularly nursing—have provided a pathway to economic opportunity for women, working families, and immigrants. Policies that push students toward costly private loans disproportionately harm these communities and risk putting advanced education out of reach for many aspiring healthcare workers. Frontline caregivers should not be priced out of continuing their education and serving their communities.

Oregon and the nation continue to face serious healthcare workforce shortages. Cutting access to affordable federal student loans for frontline healthcare workers is reckless, short-sighted, and dangerous for patients and communities.

This is yet another example of the Trump administration squeezing working-class families and undermining our healthcare system at a time when workers need relief, communities need real investment in healthcare, and Oregon desperately needs more frontline caregivers.

ONA is grateful to Attorney General Rayfield for standing up for healthcare workers and patients by challenging this unfair and inequitable rule.
