Today will be over 90° in western Washington. It is a good day to get inside of a cooling center for your safety. This is a link to the 2-1-1 cooling shelter lists for Washington, but you can also call 2-1-1 and find out where to go, near you.

We have still not been able to receive the donations made through Facebook and continue to try to reach a human.

The rare walking the talk person. Even so, one night a way is vastly different than reality.

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman has spent every Friday night since late February sleeping on a cot at the city's homeless shelter to better understand the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. Rather than relying on reports or statistics, he talks directly with shelter residents, helps serve breakfast on Saturday mornings, and observes how the shelter's programs operate. Coffman says the experience has made him more compassionate and shown him that every person's path into homelessness is different, often involving job loss, mental health struggles, disabilities, or financial hardship.

His weekly visits have also helped him identify areas where the shelter could improve, particularly for people with severe mental health or addiction issues who need additional support. Coffman hopes to strengthen partnerships with housing and mental health organizations while refining the shelter's programs to help more people move toward stable housing and self sufficiency. He says he plans to continue spending Friday nights at the shelter until he believes the system is serving everyone as effectively as possible.

MARYLAND: Montgomery County Winter Services

Anna is out in Silver Spring area today with 50 bags of snacks, Mylar blankets and hand warmers. Our resores have never been stretched this thin before, with our January fundraiser garnering only $150 dollars for supplies. A sign of increasingly hard times, as well as a Facebook glitch that failed to post our ads. The support team has never responded.

We purchased what we could and are getting it out in Montgomery County, Maryland, today. Please see the resources below, if you or someone you know needs them.

You can also call 2-1-1 to be connected with an array of services.

If you are able to donate, donations are desperately needed. Every penny we received has gone into warming supplies. We’re grateful for any help you can give. Our services are stop gap and necessary for those who cannot or will not seek shelter or who are awaiting transportation to shelter in these brutally low temperatures.

Montgomery County has set up a warming center at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville.
Gaithersburg's Homeless Services office has been asked to call the County's Crisis Center should they encounter someone in need or comes to Wells/Robertson House before taking them to the warming center.

Homeless Services can take people to the Crisis Center and/or Nebel Street Shelter, in extreme circumstances, and if weather conditions allow. Shelter staff can also assist individuals with accessing shelters through the County's Lyft transportation services. The Crisis Center will have food, blankets, cots, and toiletries. Our Homeless Services team is available 24/7 at 301-258-6390 for anyone in need of shelter to contact and make a referral.

If an individual refuses shelter during an extreme cold spell, contact the Mobile Crisis Center Team for on site support auxh as warming supplies. 240-777-4000.

For flooding in Washington State, the best thing to do right now is to call 2-1-1. With the Green River levee breach and the Cedar River cresting the highest it ever has, we have several churches and shelters that we would have suggested, now being g ordered to evacuate.

Because this is dangerous, it’s best to speak to the people who receive the most updated information, first. Unfortunately, we sate not able to stay ahead of the rapidly changing flood updates with enough confidence to direct people anywhere. We rather admit we don’t have the necessary access than risk your safety.

Please reach out for help with Mylar blankets and warming supplies in the Seattle/Kent/Renton areas of Washington.

Call 2-1-1 if necessary to find others and find out where to go and who is at max occupancy.

All around the world, there is only one model that works: Housing first.

The things that tends to fail the majority is rapid rehousing and single point of entry programs. Why? Because they tend not allow for as many individual differences and have a very fast ramp up time from when you’re housed to when you’re expected to be self sustaining. They can work for people with great health and little trauma, but for those with nervous systems that have to come down from fight or flight (usually a multi year process with ups and downs), the down times can be so overwhelming that they cost jobs, can make relapse more dangerous and often require a level of time off to deal with mental and physical health, that regular employment doesn’t allow.

We need to leave space for people’s humanity and a different type of healing, along with the housing first model. That is the way out.
