It is time for women to join the trades!

The data is clear: women are pursuing apprenticeships in Washington, but they are not getting the same access to every pathway.

A new report from the Washington State Women's Commission found that women make up 33.9% of non-construction apprentices, but just 7.7% of construction apprentices. In several trades where women are most underrepresented, they also experience higher cancellation rates and lower completion rates.

As chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee, I know apprenticeships are an important pathway to good careers and a strong workforce. But access is only part of the equation. We also need to make sure women have the support and workplace conditions they need to complete their training and build lasting careers.

I’m grateful to the Women’s Commission for this important research and the recommendations it provides as we continue working to expand opportunity across Washington’s skilled trades. 🧡👷🏽‍♀️

A huge thank you to LiUNA Local 242 and Jamie Beethe and Gerard Thomas for spending the day with ANEW’s Trades Rotation Program (TRP) Cohort 131 and providing hands-on scaffolding training!

Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals, build practical skills, ask questions about apprenticeship, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in the construction trades.
