John T. Williams was a woodcarver. He was of the Nitinaht First Nation, born into a family that has carved in Seattle for nearly a century. He was holding a piece of wood and a carving knife when a Seattle police officer wrongfully shot and killed him on August 30, 2010.

Sixteen years later, his brother Rick Williams will speak about him at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center, a short walk from the honor pole the Williams family raised in 2012.

We grieve with our Seattle Taumafa Kava ‘tokouso’ community over the senseless loss of our beloved kin, Soni Angilau, and we join in fasting and in prayers for the full healing of Vita Angilau. These two are our nephews, brothers, sons and grandsons and they are deeply loved by our community. We denounce the use of gun violence and will continue to practice ‘ofa around the kava bowl in raising up our young Pasifika men who need their village. Now more than ever, we have to tend to the care of our young people who we are losing way too soon. We love you all.
