High Asia For Aphasia

High Asia For Aphasia HAFA's mission is to raise awareness about aphasia: its causes & the effects of the disorder upon those with the condition.

We also highlight the benefits of therapy and through our climbing activities raise funds to support folks needing aphasia therapy.

Wednesday Topic: 📱 Helpful Technology for Aphasia

Tool/App: SmallTalk Aphasia

Why it Helps:
🗣️ SmallTalk is made just for people with aphasia.
It shows short video clips and simple words or phrases to help you talk with others.
💬 The app has ready-to-use phrases like “I need help” or “How are you?” so you don’t have to think up the words every time.
👩‍⚕️ You can use it anywhere—at the doctor’s office, with friends, or at home. It helps in real life, not just in therapy.

Try it This Week:
✅ Download SmallTalk Aphasia on your phone or tablet.
✅ Pick 3 phrases you use often (like greeting someone, asking a question, or saying how you feel).
✅ Practice tapping and saying them out loud once a day for a few minutes.
✅ After a few days, notice which one feels easiest to say.
✅ Try one phrase in a real conversation this week!

💡 Tip: It’s okay to start small—one phrase at a time still builds confidence and connection.

Here's a great tip from our aphasia community:

If you have difficulty with numbers, when you're out and about, carry a notebook and get someone to write the number down for you.

Wednesday Topic: Helpful Technology 📱

Tool/App: Broca AI Speech 🗣️

Why it Helps:
• Broca listens to a conversation partner and suggests replies for the person with aphasia to choose from.
• Selected replies can be spoken aloud by the app, giving the user a stronger voice in the conversation.
• Works best on tablets or laptops (not phones yet).
• Helps reduce pressure and keeps communication flowing.

Try it This Week:
1. Go to the Broca AI website and try the free version or demo. Add basic info about your hobbies and city (DON’T give contact info or specific details about yourself)
2. Use on a tablet or laptop in horizontal (“landscape”) mode.
3. During a chat, let the partner speak, and then let Broca offer replies to select from.
4. Notice which suggestions feel most helpful, and practice using them in daily conversations.

💡 Technology doesn’t replace speech—it supports it. Give Broca a try, and see if it opens up new ways to join the conversation.
