The Rotary Club of SaddleBrooke The Rotary Club in SaddleBrooke gathers as friends, each Thursday for lunch at 11 am at SaddleBrooke Ranch House Grill. For information: saddlebrookerotary.com.

We learn and work together to make a difference in both our local and global community. Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. It is a secular organization open to all persons regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 clubs and over 1.2 million members worldwide.[1] The members of Rotary Clubs are known as Rotarians. Members usually meet weekly for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to organize work on their service goals. Rotary's primary motto is "Service Above Self"; its secondary motto is, "One profits most who serves best."[2]

Helping Girls Stay in School — One Essential Need at a Time

Our October 1 Rotary program took us to rural Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in West Africa, where something as basic as menstrual health can have a profound impact on a young girl’s education and future.

Our speaker, Odette Koffi, will share the work she is leading to provide school-aged girls with reusable sanitary products, health education, and the resources they need to remain confidently in school.

A native of Côte d’Ivoire, Odette is a healthcare professional, a member of the Kino Rotary Club of Tucson, and founder of The Providence Hands, a Tucson-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering young women through education and essential resources. Odette will also share firsthand experience from her recent work in Côte d’Ivoire, where a Rotary District Grant served as the pilot for the larger Global Grant project she is now spearheading. The effort is part of Rotary’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Area of Focus and addresses a challenge faced by girls in underserved rural communities throughout Africa.

Odette brings a lifetime of service to this mission. A University of Wisconsin nursing graduate, she spent 15 years serving the Navajo Nation in New Mexico and the Tohono O’odham Nation in Arizona through the Indian Health Service. Although she retired from the Department of Health and Human Services in early 2026, she certainly hasn’t retired from serving others.

From Pete Watson Last Week:

On Sunday, Rotarian Pete Watson braved 120 degree heat, swarms of biting horseflies, a blinding Haboob and schoolchildren shooting spitwads to begin working on the Geology Trail bridge in Oracle State Park. Working like a well-oiled machine Pete and the Park Rangers were able to remove the rotting telephone poles that were part of the old bridge and replace them with solid steel support beams constructed by the welding Class at San Manuel High School. Next week, members of the RCSB will gather to cut and install the TREX planks to complete the restoration project at the Park.

From Pete Watson:

On September 15, 2026, Dan Devou, Chris Balckburn, Pete Watson and Max Knauss attended the College Consortium and Trade Fair at San Manuel High School. This event is put on by the school to introduce students to various Colleges and Schools that offer courses and training that can prepare them for employment once they graduate. Our own Bre Zientarski worked with our Club to invite business owners and trade representatives to the event to add additional career paths for the students. The RCSB manned our table to provide scholarship information and judge interest in forming a Rotary Interact Club at the high school. The students seemed to relish the opportunity to talk with the different schools and trade reps and to gather information on certificate programs, union apprenticeships and the financial aid that will be needed. Mrs. Walden, the principal, Rachelle Mortensen, the CTE Instuructor and Shannon Carranco, the school counselor, all expressed appreciation for the efforts of our Club to bring in the Trade Reps and for the relationships that are being developed with students and teachers alike. Through collaboration with the school, the students, teachers and the town itself are beginning to recognize and trust the Rotarians and to rely on us for assistance and information.

Past District Governor, Kristi Halvorson, and her husband Steve, were hosts to a member of the Romanian delegation visiting District 5500 for our annual conference! Historian Constantin from Transylvania was their guest! Joining Constantin for exchange dinners were Barbara and Bill Bengen, Wendy and Joe Guyton, Harvey Smith, and Bre and Eric Zientarski!
