For 10 years now, Puerto Peñasco has certified its first beach (Sandy Beach). To achieve this, CEDO has supported the process ever since, taking charge of Chapter 5.4 on Biodiversity of the NMX-AA-120-SCFI-2016 standard.
"Recently, auditors from the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Conformity Assessment (IMEEC) presented the results of deep, rigorous audits conducted at Sandy Beach and Playa Hermosa—a crucial step toward consolidating their environmental credentials.
During the meeting, chaired by Municipal Secretary Dalia Moncada on behalf of Mayor Alejandro Verdugo, evaluators Nestor Olivar and Ricardo Trinidad shared the criteria and scores for each category. They highlighted the optimal conditions of the evaluated sections, while Secretary Moncada emphasized that the port has successfully fostered a genuine culture of environmental awareness among citizens, business owners, and local authorities, directly benefiting tourism and the local economy.
The event included the strategic participation of directors from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), the Clean Beaches Committee coordination, the Department of Ecology, the Auxiliary Tourist Unit, and the Inspection and Surveillance department. Key developments and hotels were also represented, including Playa Bonita Resort, Playa Bonita Trailer Park, Sonoran Sky, Las Palomas Beach Resort (and Palomas Phase 3), Peñasco del Sol, Condominios Gaviotas, and Sonoran Star, among others. Representatives from non-governmental organizations and institutions supporting these actions were also in attendance.
This working group served to review in detail compliance with the strict federal environmental, safety, and service standards.
For his part, Zofemat Director Armando Borboa Robles emphasized that coordinated efforts over the past year have significantly reduced waste and improved infrastructure at the certified beaches.
Authorities expressed their gratitude for the backing of operational departments, the business sector, hoteliers, volunteers, foreign residents, and NGOs like CEDO who actively participate in conservation efforts.
It was announced that the beach certifications will be made official in the coming weeks, following the final results and rulings of the audits.
It is worth noting that Puerto Peñasco holds the record for the longest stretch of certified clean beach for recreational use in the entire country."
