Meeting Basic Needs Takes All of Us.

Food. Shelter. Health. Rest. The essentials of life may feel individual, but making sure everyone has the foundation they need to thrive is a community effort.

In Episode 24 of the Compass Ecosystem Podcast, we're joined by Colleen Iuliucci and Joan E. Serviss of the Arizona Community Foundation to explore what happens when donors, nonprofits, businesses, and community leaders bring their resources and expertise together.

Because no single organization can meet every need.

But together, we can strengthen the ecosystem that supports us all.

Everyone should have a safe place to rest.

A warm bed to sleep in. A door that closes. A space that's theirs—where the world stays out for a while, and rest finally comes easy.

For someone coming out of crisis, a safe and welcoming place to sleep is more than shelter. It's privacy after a long time without it. It's rest that isn't interrupted by worry. It's the quiet dignity of a place that belongs to you.

Give someone a place to rest, and everything else becomes possible.

If you or someone you know needs a place to start, call (520) 647-9652.

Did you know that 1 in 3 adults doesn't get enough sleep?

According to the CDC, roughly 30% of U.S. adults sleep less than seven hours a night—and the consequences go well beyond feeling tired. Chronic short sleep is linked to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression. It erodes the memory and focus that learning depends on. And it drags down productivity while raising the risk of workplace accidents.

Here's the part that matters most for the work we do: sleep and stability run in both directions. CDC data show that people who are unemployed are less likely to get healthy sleep—and poor sleep makes it harder to hold steady work. When your surroundings feel unsafe or uncertain, deep rest is nearly impossible.

That's why a safe, stable place to sleep isn't a small thing. It's a foundation. Rest is where the body heals, the mind clears, and a person gets the footing to build everything that comes next.

Having a Compass helps you rest easy.

For Miguel, that wasn't a small thing. After 25 years in addiction and a long stretch when no one would take him in, finding a safe place to live meant something most of us take for granted: a full night's sleep, without worry about where he was or what came next.

Rest is where recovery starts. It's hard to heal, hold a job, or rebuild relationships when you're exhausted and on guard. But once someone is finally sleeping through the night, everything downstream gets more possible—and for Miguel, it did. Today he's working full-time, back in touch with his family, wood carving, and making plans to go back to school. But what he talks about most isn't the housing, it’s the sense of belonging: "I feel like I belong here."

That's what having a Compass makes possible: not just a roof, but the rest, stability, and community a person needs to build a life that's theirs.

Everyone should have enough to eat.

Not as a luxury, not as a reward—as a starting point. Nutritious food is the foundation that physical health, focus, and emotional stability are built on. When it's uncertain, everything above it gets harder to reach.

At Compass, food access isn't separate from housing—it's part of the same foundation. Through Your Healthy Home Market, participants have consistent access to fresh, healthy food, because everyone deserves the conditions to build on.

Did you know that what's on your plate shapes far more than your body?

Research consistently identifies nutrition as a cornerstone of human development, supporting three things at once: physical growth, cognitive function like learning and memory, and the emotional stability that helps a person feel steady. A systematic review of 23 studies found that even marginal food insecurity was linked to cognitive delays and attention difficulties in children—effects that persisted even after accounting for economic factors (Shankar et al., 2017).

The takeaway is that food access isn't separate from stability. It's part of the same foundation. Through Your Healthy Home Market, Compass communities have consistent access to fresh, nutritious food, because the conditions for growth have to be in place before anyone can build on them.

At Compass Affordable Housing, every month we open Your Healthy Home Market—a tenant- and volunteer-run market where fresh food is free. Produce, proteins, grains, breads, and herbs grown in the Alvord Court community garden come straight to Compass communities, alongside workshops on nutrition, budgeting, and cooking. At the end of each market, people shop for what they need.

A reliable meal isn’t just fuel. It’s the ground your body needs to heal, and the focus your mind needs to plan what comes next. That’s what having a Compass makes possible—not just a place to live, but the steady access to food that helps someone regain their health, and their footing.
