As a community of individuals who devote our energies to understanding and conserving the greater Sonoran Desert across the U.S. and Mexico, we recognize the singular nature of the desert, the continuity of the O’odham across these lands, and their right to maintain that land wall free.

During construction of the Trump administration's U.S.-Mexico border wall, contractors destroyed an enormous Indigenous carving that's older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. In April 2026, heavy machinery working in Arizona's Sonoran Desert tore a 50-foot swath through the Las Playas Intaglio, a giant fish that was carved into the earth by the Tohono O'odham people at least 6,500 years ago. Thousands of saguaro cacti will be removed starting next week for construction of the border wall near the Arizona-Mexico border, according to Tohono O’odham Nation officials.
