Yaqui Deer Dancer & Singers
For the Yaqui people of Northern Mexico and Southern Arizona, Lent is a sacred season marked by forty days of ceremony, music, dance, and devotion. Among the most recognizable traditions is the Deer Dance, accompanied by singers and musicians whose songs help tell the story of the celebration.
This painting is part of Ted DeGrazia’s 1967 collection of forty works depicting the pageantry and spiritual traditions of the Yaqui Easter observances. Through bold color and expressive brushwork, DeGrazia captures the movement, energy, and reverence of a tradition that continues today.
🖼️ The complete Yaqui Easter collection is on display year-round at the Gallery in the Sun Museum.
