"Los que regresan / Those Who Return," Less Than a Month Away From Opening

The world premiere of Hugo Salcedo's new play opens November 5th, and it's one of the most urgent stories we've ever staged.

"Los que regresan" brings to life what so many immigrant families are living through right now: the fear of indeterminate detention, or the impossible choice to "self-deport." It tells the story of a couple in Tlaquepaque, Mexico, whose quiet life changes when their estranged son returns home (with his young family, including three U.S.-citizen children) after choosing to leave the U.S. rather than risk detention.

Teatro Dignidad wanted to tell this story because these aren't abstract policies: they disrupt real families and whole communities. Right here in Tucson, a landscaper with three U.S.-born children was recently hit with a fine of over $1.8 million simply for remaining in the country, as DHS now charges undocumented immigrants $998 a day to stay (azmirror.com). Nationally, roughly 132,000 people have already departed the U.S. under "Project Homecoming," with another 70,000 enrolled and expected to leave (axios.com).

"Los que regresan" puts a human face on these numbers, the generational trauma it creates, the cost of our immigration system, and the resilience of the families living through it.

Five years ago, Jesus suffered a devastating car accident that left him in a vegetative state.

Since then, he has required around-the-clock care and depends entirely on others for his daily medical needs. ❤️‍🩹

Now, his family is facing a new and frightening uncertainty: they have been informed that Jesus’ Medicaid coverage ended on September 30, 2026.

Without this coverage, his parents don’t know how they will continue providing the medical care and supplies he depends on every single day.

Jesus and his mother both have T visas and are currently waiting for a resolution in his immigration case.

Their situation is part of a new law that leaves refugees, asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking, and humanitarian parole beneficiaries without Medicaid coverage. This is another example of the inhumanity of this federal administration

If you are able to support Jesus and his family, please consider making a donation through the link in our bio. Every contribution can help his family continue providing the care he needs. ❤️

Please share this post and help us spread the word. 🙏🏽

Join us! In “Los que regresan/Those who return” commissioned by Teatro Dignidad, renowned Mexican playwright Hugo Salcedo, examines the current immigration experience of families targeted by ICE. In this moving new work and world premiere, generational trauma collides with the cruelty of our immigration system as Salcedo deftly paints a portrait of one family’s inability to cope with the fear of detention and forced self-deportation.
