June is Aphasia Awareness Month!

We are working on a project to honor the importance of this month. Here is one of our members, Peter, to give a sneak peek and share what he would like you to know about Aphasia.

Stay tuned to see what we create!

As we come to the end of our big month of May, we’re reflecting on the importance of stroke awareness and all the ways recovery can be supported.

One of our favorite moments was visiting TMC to explore the healing power of art!

The TMC Healing Arts Department hosted us for an art walk where our group experienced firsthand how creativity supports the brain. Art helps promote neuroplasticity, an important part of stroke recovery, by creating new pathways in the brain and encouraging communication.

Huge thank you to Jenna at TMC for sharing your time and talents with our aphasia group. We loved every minute! 🫶🏻

Jenna Green, Tucson Medical Center (TMC) Health Foundation's Healing Arts Program Manager, led FOA members on an Art Walk this month exploring some of the art at the nearly 8-miles of single-story hospital, TMC. We learned about the history of TMC and the community-based nature of the arts program. We had a great time. Thank you, Jenna!

The Healing Arts Program was established in 2014, by local art collectors Len and Doris Corris and curator Lauren Rabb, to encourage a more healing environment for patients, staff and visitors. Art installations throughout TMC Health System’s four hospitals, six cancer center sites, and 21 clinics, have been made possible through donations from artists and collectors and grant support from the TMC Health Foundation. The program’s gallery-quality portfolio of works includes paintings, photographs, graphics, and sculptures by both emerging and established professional artists. Many of these artists are local to Tucson or the Southwestern region. Research has shown that arts in a healthcare setting can result in positive outcomes for patients, staff, and visitors.
