Pride Month is often filled with celebration, visibility, and community. But behind the parades and festivities is a reality many LGBTQ+ people in Southern Arizona face every day: finding affordable housing, accessing affirming healthcare, receiving HIV prevention and treatment services, and having safe spaces where they can simply be themselves.

In his recent Arizona Daily Star opinion piece, SAAF CEO Dr. Carlos A. Hernรกndez discusses how increasing demand for LGBTQ+ and HIV-related services is colliding with funding uncertainty and policy challenges nationwide. At a time when many organizations are being asked to do more with less, community-based programs remain critical lifelines for thousands of Southern Arizonans.

The article highlights the importance of protecting access to healthcare, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, addressing housing instability, and ensuring people living with HIV continue to receive the services they need to thrive. It also serves as a reminder that Pride began as a movement for equality and dignityโ€”and that work continues today.

We invite you to read Carlos's full perspective and learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing our community.

Last Night, in preparation of the anniversary of Philip Walstedโ€™s death, we gathered in remembrance, reflection, and community.

SAAF and Tucson Q***r Story hosted a screening of Love & Hate โ€“ Philip Walsted from Murdered at First Sight (Season 3, Episode 9), which tells the story of Philipโ€™s life and the brutal hate crime that took his life in Tucson in 2002. Philip was murdered by a neo-Nazi in an attack later recognized as a hate crime.

Following the screening, we were honored to hear from Philipโ€™s partner, Jonathan, who joined us via Zoom for a heartfelt conversation about love, loss, memory, and resilience. Together, we reflected on Philipโ€™s legacy and the importance of preserving our communityโ€™s stories.

Afterward, we walked to Philipโ€™s memorial bench, which looks across toward the home he and Jonathan once shared. There, we placed candles at the memorial stone and spent time in quiet reflection, discussing what Philipโ€™s life and story can teach us today.

During Pride Month, it is easy to celebrate how far we have come. It is equally important to remember why Pride exists in the first place. Philipโ€™s story reminds us that the fight against hate, violence, and discrimination is not confined to history books. It requires our continued vigilance, advocacy, and commitment to protecting one another.

We remember Philip. We honor his life. And we recommit ourselves to building a world where every LGBTQ+ person can live openly, safely, and with dignity. Please Help Share Philips story with the world.

Before Pride became a celebration, it was a fight for visibility, dignity, and justice.

Join SAAF and Tucson Q***r Story on June 11 for a powerful evening of reflection and conversation as we screen Murdered at First Sight: Love and Hate, a documentary exploring the life and tragic murder of Philip Walsted and the lasting impact of anti-LGBTQ+ violence in Tucson.

Together, we'll honor Philip's memory, remember those we've lost to hate, and reaffirm our commitment to building a safer, more inclusive future for our community.
