Grateful to IACD for coordinating this pilgrimage to the Mettler Woods. It became a nature preserve through a donation of land from the Barbara Mettler Personal Trust in 2002. Plus it was so great to dance there last week during the Creative Dance Congress in nearby Champaign, Illinois.

Movement brings people together, and this past week, that felt especially true. 🌿

The 2026 Creative Dance Congress just wrapped up at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, hosted by the International Association for Creative Dance (IACD) under the theme "Looking Back, Moving Forward: Fearless Expression."

IACD was founded in 1996 by a group of Barbara Mettler's own students with the mission of continuing, broadening, and strengthening the field of Mettler-based creative dance worldwide. Mettler Studios and IACD share deep roots as Mettler Studios teacher, Mary Ann Brehm, has served as a past president of IACD, and the connection between these two organizations is a living part of Barbara Mettler's ongoing legacy.

We are so grateful to Shayla Maatuka, Managing Partner of Maatuka Al-Heeti Emkes LLC and Board Member of Mettler Studios Inc., for her incredible hospitality in hosting Mary Ann and fellow IACD participants for a welcome lunch at her firm. Your generosity set a beautiful tone for the week. Thank you, Shayla and MAE Law! 🤍

It was also a joy for Mary Ann to connect in person with our marketing partner, Aundie Owens of DASH Business Solutions, who has been supporting Mettler Studios behind the scenes. Community like this is exactly what this work is about.

🎓 Three teachers. Decades of experience. One transformative summer.

This July, Mettler Studios' Summer Dance Teacher Training will be led by three people who don't just teach this work, they live it.

✨ Mary Ann Brehm was a member of the Barbara Mettler Dance Company. With a PhD in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, over 20 years of teaching at the Tucson Creative Dance Center, and two published books on Mettler's approach, Mary Ann is one of the foremost keepers of this legacy.

✨ Karenne Koo is a certified Mettler-based Dance Educator and co-founder of Dancesequences Inc., a nonprofit built on advancing inclusion through movement. Since 2013 she has brought this work to dancers in Vietnam and communities across the globe. She is a 2022 recipient of the inaugural J. Mare Founder's Award from Ben's Bells.

✨ Gregory Colburn was a member of the Barbara Mettler Dance Company and has been teaching adult classes at the Tucson Creative Dance Center for several years. He holds a B.S. in Dance Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also teaches yoga, Tai Chi, and balance classes through El Rio Health Services.

Together they bring a rare combination of legacy, community practice, and lived experience to this two-week immersion.

If you've ever wanted to bring more Mettler-based creative dance into your life, this summer teacher training is your perfect opportunity!

🌱 Mettler Studios' Summer Dance Teacher Training returns July 13 through 25, 2026 at the Tucson Creative Dance Center. Led by three experienced teachers deeply rooted in Barbara Mettler's work, Mary Ann Brehm, Karenne Koo, and Gregory Colburn.

This two-week immersion gives you the tools, the practice, and the community to bring this approach into your own work.

🗓️ Schedule:
Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4pm (with a mid-day break and Sunday July 20 off as a rest day)

💵 Tuition:
$350 for Week 1 only
$550 for the full course IACD members receive a $30 discount.

This part of the Nancy and Walter Lob Legacy project of Mettler Studios for college level study of Mettler-based Dance. On campus Mon-Fri June 1 to 5, and online following. This immersive course involves awakening the kinesthetic sense, freely engaging movement imagination, and aligning with the nature of human movement expression to discover satisfying dance forms individually and in groups. Mettler’s approach will be studied within the context of her major influence—pre-World War II German Expressionism—as well as the inspiration of Isadora Duncan and dance education pioneer Margaret H’Doubler. 🌿 What if movement wasn't something you performed, but something you discovered?

That's the heart of Mettler-based dance improvisation and this May, you can experience it in one of the most beautiful settings in the Pacific Northwest.

Join us for Moving From Within, Moving Together: Mindfulness in Motion and Creative Expression on Saturday, May 23 at Fort Worden USO in Port Townsend, WA. This full-day workshop runs from 10am to 5pm and is led by Yael Schweitzer.

Whether you're new to creative movement or have been exploring it for years, this day is an invitation to slow down, tune in, and move with others in community. 🤍

Barbara Mettler authored 11 books, produced 12 films, and created 7 videos, all dedicated to making creative dance accessible to students and teachers everywhere.

She wasn't just a dancer. She was a builder. She knew that a practice only lives as long as it can be passed on, so she spent decades documenting her life's work so others could carry it forward.

That same spirit of sharing and teaching lives on in every class, workshop, and teacher training we offer today.
