Arizona Dolores Huerta Holiday Coalition

Arizona Dolores Huerta Holiday Coalition Our goal is to mobilize Arizona, and eventually the nation, to honor the life and legacy of César E. Chávez with a holiday every March 31st. Chávez.

In April 2001, a group of dedicated individuals and organizations started meeting with one purpose: to create a paid holiday in Pima County in honor of labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, César E. This group consisted of educators, community activists and leaders, faith-based and indigenous organizations, labor leaders, local businesses and non-profits, veterans, and individual

s determined to honor the legacy of César E. The group started a county-wide campaign consisting of petition gathering, cultural and educational events, and letter writing and phone calls to educate, inform, and motivate the Pima County Board of Supervisors to vote for a César E. Chávez Holiday. In October 2001, with leadership from Supervisors Raúl M. Grijalva and Dan Eckstrom, in front of a standing-room-only County Supervisors meeting, the holiday was passed 3-2. Instead of resting on this achievement, the Coalition sponsored the César E. Chávez Youth Leadership Conference in April 2002 at the Pima Community College Desert Vista Campus. The goal of the conference is to teach youth about community leadership, the history of the labor movement, the basics of organizing, civil rights education, and cultural diversity and awareness. Using existing community resources, financial support from sympathetic organizations, and the skill and determination of members within the group, a true coalition has been formed to benefit youth and the community.

Last Saturday was powerful. ✊🏽

Even when we thought about canceling, we chose to keep going, because this movement is bigger than a name or one person. No single individual defines it… we, the working people, do.

We honor the farmworkers and all those before us who gave everything so we could have unions, dignity, and a voice. Now it’s on us to keep that legacy alive. To stay united, to protect these spaces, and to keep showing up for each other.

That’s why we moved forward, despite everything.

We recognize and honor every sacrifice. ¡La Lucha Sigue! ❤️‍🔥

Dolores Huerta (born 1930) is a lifelong civil rights activist, labor organizer, and one of the most influential Latina leaders in American history. Born in Dawson, New Mexico, and raised in California’s Central Valley, Huerta witnessed the struggles of farmworkers and dedicated her life to fighting for justice, equality, and human dignity.

In 1962, alongside César Chávez, she co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW), where her leadership and organizing skills played a key role in landmark labor victories. Huerta led negotiations that improved wages and working conditions for thousands of farmworkers and became known for her powerful voice and unwavering commitment to nonviolent activism.

It was Dolores Huerta who coined the iconic phrase “¡Sí, se puede!”words that continue to inspire movements for justice across generations. Throughout her career, she has championed women’s rights, education, and political empowerment, reminding communities that lasting change begins when we raise our voices together.

Now in her 90s, Huerta remains a tireless advocate through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, empowering youth and families to lead with courage and compassion. Her legacy teaches us that true leadership is rooted in service, resilience, and love for community.

¡Que Viva César Chávez!

César Chávez (1927–1993) was a Mexican American labor leader, civil rights activist, and co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW). Born in Yuma, Arizona, Chávez experienced firsthand the hardships of migrant farm work after his family lost their land during the Great Depression. These early experiences shaped his lifelong dedication to improving the working and living conditions of farmworkers across the nation.

Guided by a philosophy of nonviolence and community empowerment, Chávez drew inspiration from leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through organizing strikes, boycotts, and marches, he led the historic Delano Grape Strike of 1965, a turning point that brought national attention to the struggles of agricultural workers. His call to action“¡Sí, se puede!”became a rallying cry for social justice movements around the world.
