Hard to Recycle Plastics!
An informational town hall about the “hard to recycle” plastics program will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ward 6 Council Office, 3202 E 1st St. “Hard to Recycle” plastics are things like bubble wrap, plastic bags and straws that are not accepted in curbside recycling but can be collected in the orange bins behind the Ward 6 or Ward 2 office (7820 E. Broadway, Tucson).

The City of Tucson is partnering with Hefty to make collecting these items more convenient for the public. Hefty brand has announced the expansion of the Hefty ReNew program to Tucson. Hefty ReNew is a hard to recycle plastics recycling program that will offer residents a convenient way to divert more waste from landfills. Find out more at HeftyRenew.com. This will provide Tucson residents with valuable information on the City of Tucson's current and new recycling programs. Attendees can ask questions and learn how to better manage hard to recycle plastics in their community.

"The expansion of the City of Tucson's hard to recycle plastics program with Hefty ReNew is intended to complement, not replace, current recycling efforts," said Carlos De La Torre, Director of Environmental and General Services, "We want to encourage residents to reflect on their consumption habits and take steps to minimize the purchase and use of single-use plastic items."

Residents can purchase the Hefty ReNew orange bags at their local Walmart or Fry’s. Each orange bag features a list of hard to recycle items that can be collected in the bag for recycling. Simply fill the bag with those items and when it’s full, tie it up tightly and bring the bag to a participating orange roll-off location. The recycling center then separates these bags from other materials and sends them to qualified end markets that use the hard to recycle plastics as valuable resources, such as building products, construction materials and plastic lumber. One of these qualified end markets is ByFusion Global, Inc., which has been conducting a pilot program in Tucson since 2022.
