The Sierra Club motto is to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet. The Sierra Club is one of the oldest grassroots environmental organizations in the United States. There are more than 3,000 Sierra Club members in the Tucson area. The Rincon Group supports education, environmental activism, and careful, informed and caring stewardship of resources as a means to preserve the planet for future gene
rations. To that end, the Rincon Group provides educational monthly programs concerning environmental issues affecting Southern Arizona, alerts to, and information on, getting involved in environmental issues (with an emphasis on those issues of interest in Southern Arizona), the opportunity to participate in outings to explore nature in Southern Arizona, and periodic newsletters which provide articles on environmental issues affecting Southern Arizona. The Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter was formed in 1966 as a way to help focus attention on stopping dams in Grand Canyon. The work to protect the Colorado River and Grand Canyon National Park continue today. The Grand Canyon Chapter helped win designation of four million acres of wilderness in Arizona, stopped numerous old growth logging proposals, helped restore and protect Fossil Creek, and continues to work to protect the Verde and San Pedro Rivers via its Arizona Water Sentinels program. We have helped win passage of key environmental legislation including the Environmental Quality Act, which protects our air and water, and the Heritage Fund, which provides funding wildlife programs, and have consistently helped defeat legislation that would undercut environmental protections. Our chapter has helped promote clean renewable energy such as solar and wind and energy efficiency programs, including a strong standard, as well as measures to improve air quality by supporting mass transit and emissions standards. The Rincon Group is a group off of the Grand Canyon chapter, and it services the greater Tucson area.
