NELF was founded in 1993, and dedicated to the development and improvement of the professional competence of lawyers in the area of elder law.

The National Elder Law Foundation is the only national organization certifying practitioners of elder and special needs law. NELF's Certified Elder Law Attorney designation is itself certified by the American Bar Association. There are over 500 CELAs in 48 states, and our numbers are growing steadily.

We get this question often: What’s the difference between annual dues and recertification?

Here’s the quick answer:

Annual dues = paid each year to maintain your active CELA® certification.

Recertification application = submitted every five years to demonstrate continued professional excellence through CLE, experience, and compliance with NELF requirements.

One supports your certification year to year. The other renews it for the next certification cycle.
