Getting ready for Tucson? We have new details to share!

For AGM attendees looking ahead to our gathering, the Get Ready! page has been updated with helpful new information on dining options, things to do at the hotel complex, and a few remaining spots on tours.

Fancy a bird walk or a hike into the desert? Eager to explore downtown Tucson without a car? You’ll want to check out this page!

Our conference organizers are working hard to make this a memorable and delightful AGM. Check out the latest updates so you can make the most of your time in Tucson! I'll link to the Get Ready! page in the comments below.

Arriving in Tucson on Wednesday? As the sun sets, the fun begins!

Join fellow AGM registrants for a casual Meet and Greet on the Salud Patio at the JW Marriott from 6–8 p.m. Reconnect with old friends and meet new ones as the sun sets over the mountains! The patio is just off the main lobby, and drinks, snacks, and meals will be available for purchase from the hotel kitchen.

Come early for the hotel’s complimentary tequila toast at 5:30 p.m., too!

You can also pick up your AGM materials in the conference area between 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, or grab them when you arrive Thursday or Friday.

A quick reminder for AGM attendees: October 6 is the deadline to book your room at the JASNA rate at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Hotel!

Availability is in flux as attendees make last-minute changes to their plans, so it’s worth taking another look if you’re interested in making a new booking, adding a night, or adjusting your stay. I checked twice today, around 2 p.m. and again around 10 p.m., and saw new nights open up between those checks. So if you need a room or an additional night, take another look!

AGM Schedule Reminders for Today, September 30:

Dietary Restrictions: Today is the deadline to request accommodations for dietary restrictions.

Cancellations and Refunds: Today is also the *last day* to cancel AGM ticketed activities and receive a refund.

If either of these applies to you, be sure to take care of it today!

Looking ahead: October 6 is the JW Marriott Pass's cut-off date for making room reservations at the JASNA rate. Openings are fluid based on cancellations, and some nights may have availability. Keep checking via the hotel link on our site if you are looking to stay.

You're sure to see brightly colored, skull-faced images all over Tucson. This is La Catrina, pictured here, the iconic symbol of the Day of the Dead (Día de Mu***os).

Learn about this surprisingly festive holiday and the history of La Catrina from Gabriela Montero, JASNA member and President of the Jane Austen Society of Mexico, in her special session on Thursday.

And don't miss the Austen-themed Ofrenda, a special space in the conference area for remembrance and celebration. If you like, bring a small picture or memento of a special Janeite to leave at the display.

It's peak prickly pear season in Tucson! If you like to enjoy local specialties when traveling, look for its bright color and flavor in cocktails, lemonade, jam, barbecue sauce, and ice cream. The fruit of the nopal cactus, it is often compared to pineapple, watermelon, or strawberry.

One packing tip from a 2-time AGM attendee: bring a sweater, jacket, or crushed velvet spencer. Conference hotels are notoriously cold while we sit still, rapt, during sessions. Conference organizers have little control over meeting room temps.

And if you love to crotchet/knit/embroider, you will make us all smile if you bring your work along to the sessions!

If jewelry is on your Tucson wish list, the AGM has several ways to explore the city’s thriving jewelry scene, with opportunities to browse and buy along the way--even for those of us without a car in Tucson.

The “Tumacacori and Tubac” add-on tour includes shopping time in Tubac, an arts-oriented village known for its galleries and shops. The San Xavier del Bac self-guided tour combines one of Tucson’s most important historic sites with a chance to visit Native-owned jewelry shops, all in a convenient three-hour excursion.

And if you’re taking the Bus to Downtown, you’ll have access to multiple jewelry shops, including one right in the Visitor Center.

There’s lots to discover, whether you’re looking for a special piece or just want to see what Tucson’s artists and makers have to offer.
