Thank you Mayor and Council!

Last night, my colleagues on the Council and I unanimously voted to rename Columbus Park to Danny Lopez Park!

Renaming spaces like this is about more than just a name it's about meeting the moment, honoring our Indigenous communities, and our shared spaces.

Danny Lopez, a beloved Tohono O'odham elder and educator, dedicated his life to preserving O'odham culture, language, and traditions leaving a lasting impact on generations in Tucson and beyond.

With overwhelming support from the community including 443 letters in favor this renaming reflects our commitment to uplifting Native voices and ensuring our public spaces tell a more inclusive and honest story.

A heartfelt thank you to Azul Navarrete-Valera, the Tucson Native Youth Council, and the Lopez family for leading this effort with passion and perseverance.

What a journey! About 5 years ago this idea was brought to our attention and our members took on the challenge. COVID hit and took a toll on us but our Female Co-President at the time Azul Navarrete-Valera worked tirelessly to keep this alive! With the endless support of community member Antonio Ramirez this idea became a reality. Last night we were extremely excited to witness the Mayor and Council unanimously vote 7-0 to rename the Christopher Columbus Park to the DANNY LOPEZ PARK! Thank you everyone who supported, shared/liked posts and showed up! We are truly blessed to have the Tucson and Native communities support!!!! Thank you to our sister youth council Tribal Images Youth Council for your support, collaboration and showing up!!! WE DID IT!!!

Say goodbye to Christopher Columbus Park and hello to Danny Lopez Park, named after the Tohono O’odham educator and mentor.
