"Mobilizing Health Promotion Project for Underserved Tucson Women"
represents a collaboration among Dequenesh, Southern Arizona AIDS
Foundation (SAAF), Emerge! Center Against Domestic Violence (Emerge),
and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the
University of Arizona (COPH) to bring HIV testing and prevention
education to women with a history of domestic abuse. Research indicates that women who have experienced domestic abuse or forced s*x by an intimate partner may be at higher risk of contracting HIV. COPH
student intern conducted focus groups with Emerge's clients during the
summer of 2011 to assess their health risks and awareness of HIV risk
factors. These data will be used to shape an educational program for
Emerge's clients. Dequenesh will pilot a community-based project
utilizing a mobile clinic to bring services directly to women residing
at Emerge's two emergency shelters. SAAF will provide rapid HIV
testing services through the mobile clinic and individual risk
reduction counseling. Women who test positive will be scheduled for a
confirmatory test and be referred to SAAF for assessment of need,
support, enrollment into services, and referral for HIV primary care.
This is an exciting project that capitalizes on the strengths of each
organization to provide needed healthcare services in our community.
