The University of Arizona recommends dividing up annual feedings to your lemon and lime trees into thirds to keep them healthy and free from nutrient deficiencies. These feedings should be given as follows:
• 1/3 in January – February
• 1/3 in March – April
• 1/3 in August – September
*1/3 of recommended annual total

For the home grower, granular citrus fertilizer mixes are the most efficient way to apply nutrients to citrus trees. However, a general fertilizer mix can be used if you know what to look for.

Nitrogen is the most important macronutrient for citrus. Look for a mix with a 2:1 or 1.5:1 ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus. For example, a 10-5-4 fertilizer is a better choice than a 10-10-10 for citrus. Always mix fertilizer into the soil and irrigate well after application. Otherwise, granular fertilizers left on the surface can volatilize (convert to gaseous state) and be lost. If you have gravel mulch rather than soil around your tree, apply the fertilizer and water in.

Head over to the Pima County Cooperative Extension website, click on the publications tab in the top menu, and search for “Citrus Fertilization Chart for Arizona” publication .

The chart included in this publication will guide you on how much fertilizer to apply based on the variety and size of your tree. Keep in mind that this is the time to fertilize lemons and limes only. Please refer to the publication for directions on other types of citrus.
