In the first year of working with Somali Bantu youth, Barbara was taught the word "Iskash*taa". Iskash*taa is the Somali Bantu word for working cooperatively together and fit perfectly with what the group was becoming. As Barbara built a grassroots organization that focused on empowering and learning together, she knew no other word fit as well as Iskash*taa. At that time, the Somali Bantu did not

have a written representation of their language. Therefore, Barbara was challenged with the task of creating the spelling for Iskash*taa.

🌐Asylum seekers followed all the rules, and don't deserve to be punished

HIAS welcomed the court ruling which halted the Trump administration's policy of refusing to process immigration paperwork of any kind from people from travel ban countries.

We have a gentle Eritrean American in his 80s that has requested suspenders as he is losing weight. He has gardened, harvested, cleaned, juiced, landscaped, volunteered, cooked, educated with Iskash*taa Refugee Network for many many years. Please help us connect our iconic iska-friend with suspenders =- they will look so good on him!!!
