Did you know that nearly 2,900 vertebrate species are likely threatened with extinction, yet have no threatened status?

You didn’t? That’s because no one knew this until now...

We're excited to launch the Species Black List, our latest initiative to map Life Overlooked. There’s a lot of interesting, novel data in here, and we'll be sharing more highlights throughout the week.

Jump in, explore the data, and let us know what you think!

Thousands of species are slipping away without ever being counted as at risk. The Biodiversity Group's effort to find out which species those are, before the decision gets made for us.

We have redefined what conservation means in our latest journal article!

While the significance of the new definition is a bit pedantic, we also propose the terms beneficial/harmful species to replace the often-critiqued "native/invasive" dichotomy.

You can get free access to the paper until March 14th with the link below and here are 2 of the proposed definitions:

Beneficial species: A species or population which has been identified through a preponderance of good science for its net positive impact(s) on the functional integrity of suitable habitat and whose presence may align with positive socio-political attitudes.

Biodiversity conservation: Any action that intends to have a net positive outcome for one or more suitable habitats and/or beneficial species.

As conservation science and societal values have evolved, consensus on the precise meaning of the term “biodiversity conservation” has remained elusiv…

One more reason to conserve life overlooked

"When farmers increased their use of pesticides, the infant mortality rate rose by almost 8%. This corresponds to an additional 1,334 infant deaths. Or, for every 1% increase in pesticides, there was a 0.25% increase in the infant mortality rate"

Bats are considered a natural pesticide, widely relied on by farmers as an alternative to chemical pesticides to protect their crops from insects. But since 2006, many bat populations have collapsed in counties in North America due to an invasive fungus found in the caves bats use during the day and...

Sometimes the "uglier" the species is, the more we actually need it...

"The unintentional decimation of these heavy, scavenging birds allowed deadly bacteria and infections to proliferate, leading to the deaths of about half a million people over five years"

"The 50 million-strong vulture population had plummeted to near zero because of diclofenac, a cheap non-steroidal painkiller for cattle that is fatal to vultures"

A new study links the vulture decline in India to deadly bacteria spread, causing about 500,000 deaths.
