Happy Pride Month πŸŒˆπŸ’˜πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

According to the National Network for Youth (NN4Y), "LGBTQ+ youth face homelessness for many reasons, and no single factor tells the whole story. Family rejection, discrimination, economic instability, and gaps in supportive services all play a role. Many young people leave home to escape unsafe and unaccepting environments, while others experience homelessness after aging out of foster care, being pushed out of school, or facing systemic barriers in housing and employment.

Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth are over 120% more likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. They make up as much as 40% of all youth experiencing homelessness, despite representing only 9.5% of the overall population."

How do we address this❓NN4Y suggests the following:

πŸ‘‰ Provide low-barrier housing and service options that respect each youth’s sexual orientation and gender identity
πŸ‘‰ Ensure inclusive, LGBTQ+ competent health and mental health services to address gaps in care and lack of gender-affirming support.
πŸ‘‰ Support legal and policy protections for accurate identity documents to reduce barriers to housing, employment, and services.
πŸ‘‰ Offer LGBTQ+ centered programs for education, employment, and life skills to counter systemic discrimination.

By addressing these barriers with solutions that are affirming, flexible, and responsive to each youth’s needs, communities can help LGBTQ+ youth move out of homelessness and toward stability and thriving futures!

Extremely low-income renters are more likely than renters of all other income groups to have characteristics that limit the hours that they are able to work: they are more likely than all other renters to be seniors, have a disability, be enrolled in school, or be single-adult caregivers of children or individuals with a disability.

This graphic from the Gap Report from National Low Income Housing Coalition shows the prevalence of severe housing cost burdens for renter households by metropolitan area. Each map represents an income group. Maps show that severe cost burdens are pervasive for extremely low-income renters in all 50 of the top metropolitan areas and become less pervasive for each successively higher income group. For middle-income renters, severe cost burden rates are at or below 5% in all but six of the top 50 metropolitan areas.
