What is an Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU)? ➡ A Casita, or Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a small, secondary home located on the same lot as an existing residence.

Since January 2022, Tucson has permitted ADUs in zones that allow residential uses. More than a sleeping quarters, a Casita is permitted to have an independent kitchen, as well as its own entrance, bathroom, living, and sleeping space.

Casitas are just one way to add to Tucson's varied and flexible housing supply.

More older women are becoming the heads of their households, but many are facing growing financial and housing challenges.

Today, millions of women age 65+ live alone, earn lower incomes than older men, and are more likely to rent and struggle with high housing costs. These challenges are even greater for older Black and Hispanic women, many of whom face the combined pressures of limited income, rising expenses, and the need for additional care.

As more women age alone, access to affordable housing, healthcare, and support programs is becoming increasingly important.
