🔬👀On Research matters we are learning about the eyes with Remi Bliss📚🤓
Let's hear from her now! "Hello! My name is Remi Bliss and I am a rising senior at the University of Arizona. I am majoring in Physiology and Medical Sciences with a minor in Nutritional Sciences. After graduation, I hope to complete a master's in public health, ideally in the UK, then apply for medical school. Through the Undergraduate Biology Research Program, I was introduced to a great lab run by Dr. Brian McKay. In McKay’s lab we study Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which is the deterioration of the retina. AMD is the number one cause of blindness in the American population over 65 years of age. We have been working to discover the mechanisms and prove the efficacy of a drug called L-DOPA, which can delay the onset and reduce the severity of AMD. Along with this, we have been working with Banner Ophthalmology to collect human tear samples with the purpose of developing a non-invasive diagnostic tool for various ocular conditions. Outside of working in the lab, I love exploring and spending time in nature, I also enjoy working out, cooking, and trying new restaurants!"

Introducing our first guest on Research Matters! "My name is Jesus Mota and I am a rising senior majoring in biomedical engineering and debating whether I should take one more class to get a minor in mathematics. The Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP) introduced me to the field of research where I began working in Dr. Falk’s neuroscience lab focusing on Parkinson’s Disease (PD). PD is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that causes cognitive impairment and motor symptoms. I began working in my lab in the summer of 2022 and have been working in this lab since. The current project I am working on is experimenting with a possible cognitive treatment for PD using a therapeutic while also analyzing motor effects. My experience in this lab has addressed my curiosity about working in a research lab and taught me the determination and commitment necessary to conduct research. Outside of researching and trying to get a degree at the U of A, I enjoy spending my free time with friends and family to take stress off my shoulders."
Thanks to UBRP for making these connections and special thanks to Bessett for contributing her music for this program.
