Coming up next SATURDAY, March 7th at the Stevens Gallery in association with the Visionary Arts Exhibit sponsored by Southern AZ Friends of Jung - a wonderful Presentation and Workshop by Charles Gillespie!:

VISION QUEST:
Healing with Jungian Depth psychology & the Sacred Image
March 7, 2026, 1 - 3 pm at Stevens Gallery 1545 E Copper St, Tucson, AZ (Gallery opens at 12:00)

In this two-hour presentation, Jungian depth psychology comes into dialogue with the sacred imagery of local artists. Together, we will explore how images of the transcendent open a path to healing, creativity, and meaning. Drawing on Jung’s concepts of archetypes, the collective unconscious, and active imagination, we will consider how art mirrors the soul’s inner life and supports the work of mental health counseling. This training invites artists, therapists, and seekers alike into reflection and discussion about how the psyche expresses itself through symbol, image,
and the transformative powers of the creative process.

Charles Gillispie, MFA, LIAC, is a licensed independent addiction counselor and expressive arts therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona and specializes in integrating Jungian depth psychology, sacred imagery, and creative process in mental health counseling. His work explores how archetypal image, symbol, and active imagination support healing, meaning-making, and individuation.

Charles has published widely on the expressive arts in counseling in Psychological Perspectives, Journal of Poetry Therapy, Addiction Professional, Presence, and related journals. He is the author of two poetry collections, The Way We Go On (University of Nebraska Press) and Ever Loyal to the Story (League of Minnesota Poets, John Rezmerski Memorial Book Award). A graduate of the Tacheria School of Spiritual Direction, he brings a contemplative, image-centered approach to clinical and educational settings.

Meet Linda Valdez

Like all of us, Linda Valdez is a prisoner of time. But she stops time with a camera. This moment. That place. Those lights that draw ephemeral lines in the dark. The images are frozen reality. Sometimes a photo is enough without any changes. Sometimes her photographs become the palette to create photo montages. They are cut, layered, warped, and transmuted. Each contributes something to a new reality. Her art is an invitation to go into the unknown through a juxtaposition of familiar things. It’s a place beyond the cage of reality, but not beyond truth. It is as genuine as her subconscious and as universal as the longing to be seen and understood.

Valdez’ art was part of the Phoenix Airport Museum’s Night Vision exhibit 2023-2024, the Tucson Museum of Art’s Arizona Biennial 2020, and Arizona ACLU’s 60th anniversary exhibit, “In This Together” 2018-2019. She has also exhibited at galleries in the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, as well as Arte de la Vida, Raices Taller 222, and Pima College in Tucson. She is a retired Arizona journalist and author of several books, including her memoir Crossing the Line: A Marriage Across Borders.

Artists Call For Jungian-Themed Exhibit

“ DREAMS, DEITIES, AND ARCHETYPES”

Calling Artists for an Exhibition of Visionary Artists

January 31st through April 21st 2026

“The essence of a great work of art is its ability to rise above the personal

and speak to the heart of humankind.” …… Carl Gustav Jung

The revolutionary psychologist Carl Jung was also an artist who saw art as a powerful expression of the unconscious, and as a way for the collective unconscious to manifest. He believed visionary art often came from a transcendent or “outside” source, “flowing” through the artist rather than solely reflecting the artist’s conscious will. Visionary art often departs from traditional realism to portray a less tangible world, exploring the mysterious “pentimento’s” of a “larger reality” that arises from the inner landscape of each artist.

The Southern Arizona Friends of Jung, in collaboration withthe Stevens Gallery in the Stearns Center for the Arts in Tucson, Arizona invite artists to submit work that shares their unique perspectives. The Stevens Gallery is a bright, modern space that will host this impressive and beautiful new exhibit in early 2026 – we hope you will join us in this celebration of Visionary Art!
