This month, our Chief Program Officer, Colleen McDonald, joined Dr. Dominique Roe-Sepowitz, who leads ASU's Office of S*x Trafficking Intervention Research (STIR), to present to the Governor's Council to Combat Human Trafficking in Arizona.

Together, they shared results from the 2025 Youth Experiences Survey (YES), which looks at trafficking experiences among young adults ages 18 to 24 experiencing homelessness. When young people share their experiences, we learn who is most at risk and how to reach them sooner.

We're proud of our long partnership with and grateful to the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family for making space for this conversation.

Our Family's former board member, Hazel Heinzer, and Stephen Chukumba, Founder/Executive Director of The Dads Foundation, facilitated Tucson's Dads Meetup. The Dads Foundation is a national nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and supporting fathers of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive youth. Please join us in attending the screening of The Dads documentary on September 27th at Proscenium Theater to learn how to support and be a strong ally for transgender youth in our community.

Did you know that Our Family provides services for victims of s*x and labor trafficking in Southern Arizona? Our Family's CEO, Jamie Snyder, presented on victim services at AATN's event along with our partner in this work, Sergeant Jove, from the Tucson Police Department's Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit. AATN supports Our Family's victim advocacy services and helps provide critical resources to TPD that helps identify, arrest, and prosecute traffickers. We're proud to share that our Senior Managers, Sierra Pelham and Joanna Wong, recently attended the 2026 Animal Welfare Summit, hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice.

As our agency partners with the DOJ to provide emergency shelter and housing for domestic violence survivors and their pets, opportunities like this help us strengthen our response and continue providing compassionate, informed care for families and the animals that are part of them.

We provided emergency shelter while she worked with her case manager to find stable housing. Today, her family is safely housed, she's working, attending school, and building a brighter future for herself and her children.

Juneteenth marks the day when all enslaved people were freed in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, slavery wasn’t completely abolished in the U.S. until 1865. On June 19th, 1865, enslaved black Americans in Texas, who were never informed of their freedom, were finally told that they were free. June 19 marks the day when everyone in the United States was officially free, and that is why we celebrate Juneteenth.
