City of Eloy officials should take note: Freepoint Eco-Systems—the company proposing a plastic pyrolysis facility in your community—has suspended operations at a similar site in Hebron, Ohio. Since opening in late 2024, that facility has faced ongoing environmental and operational challenges, underscoring concerns that plastic pyrolysis remains an unproven and uncertain technology.

Fossil fuel industry presses to increase plastic production, while downplaying its environmental impacts.

More than 8 billion tons of plastic waste clog the planet. If stacked within Chicago’s Millennium Park, plastic dumped into the environment since the middle of the last century would rise beyond the edge of outer space.

Silicone is more stable than most plastics, but we still need more research to understand whether it sheds microparticles under real-world conditions.

Microplastics have become a growing concern in everyday kitchens, pushing many consumers to swap plastic containers and traditional nonstick cookware for “cleaner” alternatives like glass, stainless steel and silicone. Silicone, in particular, has exploded in popularity because it’s flexible, ...

Plastic has become woven into nearly every part of modern life. Yet the fossil fuel and petrochemical corporations driving its production often remain largely invisible in the public conversation. While media coverage frequently highlights the growing mountains of plastic waste and pollution, far less attention is paid to the industry responsible for producing it in the first place. In a powerful investigative work filled with compelling personal stories, acclaimed journalist Beth Gardiner uncovers the reality of the massive petrochemical industry that is saturating the planet with plastic — even as it prepares to dramatically expand production in the years ahead.

Plastic production has doubled over the last 20 years – and will likely double again. For author Beth Gardiner, metal water bottles and canvas tote bags are not the solution. So what is?

Can you imagine a world plagued by even more plastic pollution than our current levels? Big Oil can.

As the world continues to transition away from burning fossil fuels to power it—to mitigate climate change—Big Oil wants to continue to sell its products. So the industry has big plans to pivot to plastic, which is made of fossil fuels—and exacerbates climate change. Big Oil has been pouring billions of dollars into new plastic plants, hoping to double or even triple plastic production.

We can't recycle our way out of the current deluge of plastic and certainly won't be able to recycle our way out of a more polluted future. Industry dreamt up recyling to shift the onus of cleanup away from them, the producers and onto us, the consumers and taxpayers. Plastic regulation and reduction are the solutions. (But I will still refuse plastic every chance I get!)

Read the gripping story in Beth Gardiner's new book, Plastic Inc: The Secret History and Shocking Future of Big Oil's Biggest Bet.
