As we continue to honor Immigrant Heritage Month, it's important to remind everyone that everyone in the United States has rights regardless of their immigration status. So whether you're visiting or new to this country, here are a few local Arizona resources.

✅The ACLU of Arizona offers an Immigrants’ Rights Resource Hub with information on law enforcement, ICE, Border Patrol, workplace raids, immigration court, schools, health centers, and places of worship. https://www.acluaz.org/immigrants-rights-resource-hub/

Knowing your rights, including your housing rights, is important. Fair housing laws protect people based on national origin. This means landlords, property managers, or housing providers cannot deny you housing, discourage you from applying, or treat you differently because of your background, ancestry, accent, ethnicity, or perceived national origin.

Where You’re From Should Not Limit Where You Can Live.

Immigrant Heritage Month recognizes the valuable contributions of immigrant communities to our country. It also reinforces that national origin must not be used to deny housing, discourage renters or buyers, or treat families unfairly.

Discrimination in housing against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) is illegal. AAPI may be covered under both race and national origin.

Housing discrimination can mean being denied an application, discouraged from renting or buying in a certain area, refused language assistance or communication support, or treated unfairly by a landlord or property manager because of your AAPI race or national origin.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to honor the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have helped shape U.S. history and civic life.

According to the Census Bureau, May was chosen to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and to recognize the contributions of Chinese workers who helped build the transcontinental railroad, which was completed in 1869.

AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the culture, history, and social contributions of AAPI communities. It also brings attention to how housing discrimination can affect AAPI individuals because of race, national origin, language barriers, or immigration status.

This May 2026 is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, honoring the history, cultural contributions, and various leadership roles of the AAPI communities across the US.

It also serves as a reminder that fair housing belongs to everyone.

Housing discrimination can take many forms, including unfair housing practices based on race, national origin, and language. Everyone deserves equal access to housing, no matter who they are, where they come from, or what language they speak.

This month, we honor AAPI communities by working toward housing free of discrimination for everyone.

Arizona community spotlight: The City of Chandler is hosting its Asian American Community Connection event on Tuesday, May 12, from 4:45 to 8 p.m. at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center. This free AAPI Heritage Month event will bring together community members, city departments, and local organizations for meaningful connections, resource sharing, and networking. As highlighted by Lisa Rice with the National Fair Housing Alliance, progress depends not only on policy, but on our commitment to fair housing, even when no one is watching.

Help Stop Housing Discrimination.

This Fair Housing Month, the National Low Income Housing Coalition is calling on people across the country to tell Congress to protect and fund HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, the Fair Housing Initiatives Program, and the Fair Housing Assistance Program — all critical tools in the fight against housing discrimination.

If we want to stop housing discrimination, these programs must be supported.

Come celebrate Fair Housing Month with SWFHC in Flagstaff!

If you’re in Northern Arizona, stop by and meet the Southwest Fair Housing Council at the Flagstaff Housing Resource Fair on April 29, 2026, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library, 300 W. Aspen Ave.
