Tucson Electric Power is planning to build an electrical substation on the Santa Cruz River in a spot with a history of flooding. When it floods, the vulnerable low-income population in that area will lose power, potentially for days or weeks. TEP hid the alternatives because this site is cheapest for them. Tell Mayor Romero and your City Council member to say No to the Cottonwood Substation. Don't let TEP cut corners. Put people over profits!

Thank you to Mayor Romero and our City Council for protecting our water and resisting the pernicious efforts by international mining companies and AZ Republicans to destroy our sacred Santa Rita mountains.

The Rosemont Mine must be stopped.

The city said it will divert its own water from other recharge sites to prevent the owners of the Rosemont mine from using a city project.

We call on Mayor Regina Romero and the City Council to fulfill the promise they made in June to cancel water bill debt. Last week they voted to cancel debt for just 17% of the families in debt, unfairly leaving out 15,000 families for unclear and unadvertised reasons.

In June, the Tucson City Council unanimously voted to cancel water bill debt. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened yet. We understand that it takes time to sort out the details and implement the policy, but 3 months is long enough. The number of families in debt has grown to 18,000 this summer. Many are facing imminent water shutoff. Each day that passes without action is another day that these families continue to suffer the burden of worrying about meeting their basic material needs for survival.

Casa Maria Soup Kitchen-a catholic worker house, an organization in South Tucson that helps low income families pay their utility bills and is a member of the Our Water Tucson coalition, has had dozens of Tucsonans request their help to pay off water debt and deal with shutoff warnings this summer, frustrated by the delay on the promised debt cancellation. Please contact Mayor Romero and your City Council member (before their meeting tomorrow!) and tell them it's time to fulfill their promise to .

Our drought crisis has become national news. Arizona will get an 18% cut in our Colorado River water supply. This is only the beginning.

Additional cuts — each tier with worsening impact on agriculture and municipal water — are expected if Lake Mead continues to fall.

Last night, Mayor Romero and the Tucson City Council made the historic decision to implement differential water rates and use the revenue to cancel water bill debt, expand the Low Income Assistance Program, and invest in climate resiliency. This is a huge victory and we're so proud and grateful of the work of every single one of you who wrote, called, spoke at a meeting, or talked to a friend.

The resolution they passed includes the key goals of the Our Water Tucson platform. All of our demands for how to use the revenue were included, including those that were not even on the table until we began our campaign – debt cancellation for over 10,000 families is on the way! The resolution did not go into detail about how the Low Income Assistance Program would be improved, so we will keep organizing to ensure that low income families in Tucson see lower bills, low income families outside city limits see the new rates offset, renters become eligible for assistance, and barriers to enrollment are removed.

This is a huge victory for climate justice, ecosocialism, and the equitable use of natural resources in our Sonoran Desert. With this decision, the Mayor and Council have said that our water belongs to the City, not to sprawl developers.

Now some details: The Mayor and Council chose Option 7, which is a range from 10–40% depending on how much water the household uses, designed to further incentivize conservation and efficiency. We advocated for a flat 40% hike (Option 4) because it would raise more revenue, but Option 7 will still raise $10 million per year – a great start. It appears that they were leaning toward Option 6, which raises only half the revenue of Option 7, but months of relentless pressure from our coalition appears to have resulted in a doubling of the revenue and we are proud of that.

There are so many people to thank, starting with Mayor Regina Romero. In the face of relentless negative pressure from developers and wealthy special interests, she stood strong and fought for a fair water policy. Last night when she said "a city without water doesn't exist," she showed that we need to look at the big picture and act boldly in the face of the Climate Emergency. Tucson will be uninhabitable for future generations if we don't protect our dwindling water supply, and last night our Mayor took a huge step to secure our future.

Councilmember Paul Cunningham also deserves tremendous credit for spearheading the differential rates initiative and standing up for Tucsonans who suffered decades of inequity. He received overwhelming negativity from opponents but he never backed down in his mission to protect our people and our environment.

We especially want to thank the wonderful folks at Casa Maria Soup Kitchen-a catholic worker house. They were the first group to endorse and join the Our Water Tucson coalition, largely because their history of fighting to cancel utility debt and provide relief to low income families was a perfect match with our mission. They have hosted numerous events and spread the word far and wide with beautiful infographics, videos, and word of mouth, and this would not have been possible without their tireless efforts.

We also want to thank the folks at Democratic Socialists of America - Tucson who were also with us from the beginning. Tucson DSA mobilized their membership early to build pressure on the Mayor and Council, which was indispensable in making this happen. They share in this victory and we stand with them as the fight for a fairer Tucson continues.

City Council candidate Miranda Schubert for Ward 6 was an early endorser and vocal advocate who wrote excellent op-eds and letters to the editor in support of Our Water Tucson and frequently mentioned our platform in debates and speeches. We believe her passionate leadership on this existential issue is one of the biggest reasons her opponent, Councilmember Steve Kozachik, begrudgingly decided to vote yes at the last minute (when called on to vote, he dejectedly said "â€ĶI suppose."). We need more leaders like Miranda.

By the end, our coalition consisted of 17 local organizations and leaders. Hundreds of Tucsonans wrote, called, or spoke at the public hearing. We want to thank all of the other local organizations and leaders who endorsed Our Water Tucson – and every single Tucsonan who made their voice heard because they made this victory possible. This happened because of your hard work. Thank you and onward!

The people of Tucson have spoken, loud and clear: we want our debt cancelled and our working families' bills lowered. We want a fair water policy after so many decades of inequity. We want to protect our dwindling water supply and make Tucson a more climate resilient city.

We deserve these things. Tonight, we get to see if our elected officials agree. Mayor Regina Romero, Vice Mayor Nikki Lee, Paul Cunningham, Tucson Ward 3 Council Office, Fimbres for Tucson, and Steve Kozachik: do the right thing for the people you represent. Tonight is a legacy defining moment. The people of Tucson are watching.

This is the type of bold progressive leadership we need in the midst of the parallel crises of drought, climate change, and poverty. Miranda Schubert for Ward 6 has been a passionate advocate for the Our Water Tucson platform.

When she brought this up at yesterday's Ward 6 City Council debate, the incumbent Steve Kozachik dodged the issue and changed the subject. We're told that he struck a back room deal with the moderators not to ask about it.

Our Water Tucson does not officially endorse candidates, but we encourage you to support candidates who will tackle existential issues head on and lead the fight to protect our dwindling water supply for future generations.

As a Ward 6 City Council candidate who is passionate about innovative policy-making that meaningfully prioritizes sustainability and equity, I proudly support of the Our Water Tucson proposal. A climate

ðŸšĻ "Red alert" ðŸšĻ Our primary water source is drying up. Meanwhile, our groundwater is being poisoned by PFAS and our treatment plants are closing. This is a crisis. The first step is to implement differential water rates to stop spreading our supply thin & subsidizing sprawl.

Fantastic op-ed by Miranda Schubert for Ward 6 about the Our Water Tucson campaign for differential water rates. Miranda has been a passionate advocate for a fair water policy that benefits working families and helps secure Tucson's future in the era of drought and climate change. We desperately need more leaders like her on the City Council.

"Let's stop giving away our most precious resource for so little, and let's bake into the policy that any revenue must go toward canceling the water debt, expanding low-income assistance programs, and climate resiliency measures." — Ward 6 Council candidate Miranda Schubert

06/09/2021

This was a truly historic moment for Tucson. Last night, Mayor Regina Romero not only reaffirmed her support for differential water rates but also came out in support of the platform for how to use the revenue: cancelling debt, expanding low income assistance across the service area, and investing in climate resiliency. This was a legacy defining decision and she absolutely came through for the people of Tucson.

The fight is not yet over and there is more work to be done to get this policy passed into law, but this was an incredible moment that is worth celebrating on behalf of working families and future generations of Tucsonans.
