Before your junk becomes landfill decor… check the Recycle Directory first. 👀♻️

Every day, thousands of reusable and recyclable items end up in landfills simply because people don’t know where they can go. A large portion of landfill waste could have been reused, repaired, donated, recycled, or properly disposed of instead.

That’s why we created the Recycle Directory, a simple community resource designed to help Tucson residents quickly find where to take items instead of tossing them away. From electronics and batteries to clothing, plastic film, scrap metal, and more, local organizations and businesses have shared their contact information to make recycling easier and more accessible for everyone.

Before you throw something away, take a moment to check the directory. One small search can help reduce landfill waste, conserve resources, and keep our community cleaner and more beautiful. 🌎

Shhh… the Tucson choir is performing🐦🎶

The cactus wrens are gossiping from the saguaros, the doves are softly cooing good morning, hummingbirds are zooming around like tiny flying jewels, and the curve-billed thrashers are making sure everyone hears their song too. Spring and early summer are when the desert gets extra chatty as birds build nests, raise babies, and sing from sunrise to sunset ✨🐣🏜️

Nature’s playlist has always been one of the sweetest sounds. 🌵✨ It’s a reminder for us to slow down long enough to hear them. And studies have shown that listening to birdsong can help reduce stress, calm the mind, and make people feel more connected to nature! ☺️

Here in Tucson, we share our environment with creatures who have sung across this desert long before us. Sometimes the sweetest thing we can do is simply stay quiet… and listen. ✨

At long last, our project with the City of South Tucson to bring much-needed shade trees to South 6th Avenue, one of the region’s busiest pedestrian corridors, was planted today ✨🌳

Funded through the CDBG program, this project doubled the size of eleven planting boxes along a previously treeless stretch of South 6th Ave 🪏🌱We planted Netleaf Hackberries and Palo Breas for shade, along with Hesperaloes as accent plants to help beautify the corridor.

These beautiful trees and plants will be lovingly maintained by local South Tucson landscaping business We Do It All (check out their Facebook 🍃). We’re incredibly grateful for their continued care, support, and dedication to watering these new plantings and helping them flourish for the community 🌳💧

And huge thanks to for the concrete sawing and tree box expansion, the Pima County CDBG team for their guidance, and the City of South Tucson, especially .t.council (Vice Mayor Melissa Brown-Dominguez) and City Planner Josue Licea for their leadership and support throughout this project.

These new trees will help shade pedestrians and transit riders, beautify storefronts, reduce urban heat, and calm traffic along one of South Tucson’s busiest streets. 🌳☀️

Happy World Bee Day ✨🐝 but really, bees deserve our appreciation every single day!

Today we’re highlighting some of Tucson’s amazing bees and the important role they play in the Sonoran Desert. From cactus bees that help pollinate saguaros and prickly pear, to gentle mason bees, hardworking leafcutter bees, tiny sweat bees, and essential bumble bees. Tucson is home to an incredible diversity of native pollinators that keep our desert alive and thriving 🪻🐝🌵

Bees are some of the most important workers in our environment, quietly sustaining ecosystems through pollination. Every time they move from flower to flower, they help plants reproduce, supporting wildflowers, desert plants, trees, wildlife, and even the food systems we rely on. In a place as unique as Tucson, native bees are deeply connected to the rhythm of the desert and its seasonal blooms.

But these tiny workers are facing big challenges like pesticides, habitat loss, climate shifts, and human landscapes that often remove the native plants and natural spaces they depend on 🏜️😔💔

Honoring bees means more than a single day of recognition. It means protecting them every day by planting native species, avoiding harmful chemicals, preserving natural spaces, and remembering that healthy ecosystems often look wild, not perfect.

On World Bee Day, and every day after, we celebrate Tucson’s bees, and commit to protecting the life they help sustain! 🌸🐝✨

During a recent cleanup event, while walking through an apartment complex parking area, we spotted a young Mourning Dove fledgling resting in an open drive-through zone where cars regularly pass. The real concern here wasn’t abandonment, as parents were actually close by and carefully keeping watch, but safety.

The fledgling was simply in a risky location, where it could easily be ran over by a vehicle. To help, Council Member Kevin Dahl gently moved the bird just a short distance, keeping it within the same area, but out of the driving path and into a more sheltered spot where the parents could still find and care for it. 🐦🪶

Fledglings often spend time on the ground as part of their natural learning process, especially in urban environments where wildlife and people share the same spaces. In most situations, the best choice is to observe quietly and avoid disturbing them.

However, when there’s immediate danger, a small, careful intervention like this can help prevent harm while still keeping the bird with its natural family care. When we checked back later, the fledgling was gone, hopefully safely continuing its journey.

If you’re ever unsure, reaching out to a local wildlife rehabilitation center is always the safest option!

What if the things left behind at the end of the U of A school year could help someone else instead of ending up in a landfill? 🤩📚

For the first time since 2018, the University of Arizona is bringing back its dorm move-out rummage sale in Tucson! The four-day event takes place May 16, 17, 23 and 24 from 8 am to 5 pm at ACE Recycling, 9110 S. Eisenhower Road.

From clothing and household goods to furniture collected from nearly 600 dorm rooms, this event is about much more than shopping. It is about sustainability, community and helping students in need.

The first day of each weekend features deeply discounted prices, while the second day offers free items while supplies last. Shoppers are encouraged to bring large reusable bags.

What makes this even more meaningful is where the proceeds go. Funds raised will support the Dorm Assistance Award, helping low-income and first-generation students pay a portion of their housing costs.

After nearly seven years since the last sale, it is inspiring to see a program like this return and remind the community that reuse matters. Every item kept out of the landfill is one small step toward protecting our environment while supporting the people around us. ♻️ 👏

The Sonoran Desert is far more than cactus, mountains, and open land. It is a deeply connected ecosystem filled with life, where every species plays a role in keeping the desert healthy and balanced. Here in Tucson, Arizona, endangered and vulnerable animals such as the jaguar, lesser long-nosed bat, Mexican gray wolf, desert tortoise, and many others are essential to the survival and harmony of this remarkable desert we call home. 🌵🏜️🐆🦇

Pollinators help native plants reproduce. Predators help maintain balance within ecosystems. Small desert species support soil health, waterways, and food chains that countless forms of life depend on. When one species disappears, the effects ripple far beyond what we can see.

Around the world, endangered species face habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and human expansion. But awareness and education have the power to create change. Protecting wildlife begins with learning how deeply connected we are to the natural world around us and understanding that these species are not separate from us, they are part of the very systems that allow life to thrive.

We can help by respecting wildlife habitats, protecting native lands and water sources, reducing pollution, supporting conservation efforts, planting native species, driving carefully in wildlife areas, and continuing to spread education and awareness throughout our communities.

The desert is not empty. It is alive, ancient, and interconnected. Every species matters, and every effort to protect them helps preserve the future of our shared home.

Did you know the majority of the food we throw away is actually compostable? When food is wasted, it ends up in our landfill where it creates harmful greenhouse gases, but composting gives those nutrients back to the earth instead! ✨🥗🌿

The FoodCycle Program, operated by in partnership with the , is making it easier for residents to be part of the solution.

This program offers residents the opportunity to drop off food scraps at locations across Tucson, where they are taken to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus and turned into compost that is later redistributed back into our community. ♻️

How it works:
1️⃣ Receive training, materials, and a free container for your food scraps (you can also use your own)
2️⃣ Drop off your food scraps at one of 15+ locked bin locations across Tucson
3️⃣ Bins are collected weekly and taken to the composting facility at Los Reales
4️⃣ Compost is created and returned back into the community 🌎

By joining a training, you’ll also receive:
✨ Access codes to drop-off sites
✨ Helpful training materials
✨ A compost bin
✨ Updates through the FoodCycle newsletter

Have questions or need support?
📩 [email protected] , the compost team is there to help!
