With gratitude – Thank you to all who have given with exceptional generosity in response to great need in Guatemala, following Covid shutdowns and two fierce hurricanes, complicated by institutional neglect and social inequities considered the greatest in Central America. Your generosity is humbling. We urge health leaders to consider the funds “muy santo” (very holy).
Update – second meeting in Nebaj – We were able to send $5,400 of your donations to Guatemala last week (December 15), in two separate deposits to leading members of the Equipo de Salud who met again in Nebaj, Ixil Area, this past weekend. Because roads are still blocked and bridges out, a third member of the Equipo was unable to attend.
We asked them to prioritize, and respond to emergency needs. Their final reports aren’t in, but it is clear that, for them, incentive payments for community health volunteers remain a priority, especially since the infrastructure collapse has left some communities without other support.
The Equipo identifies medicine shortages as a major problem, especially for treatment of chronic ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They report that even the isolated communities are responding with resilience and have food at present. Diego adds that most are very, very poor, but they are doing well.
