Stephen Ministry Corner: Thank You God

I do not claim to understand everything, but this much I know with certainty: the Lord has cared for me and kept me safe more times than I will ever be able to measure.
There were seasons when I had no idea He was leading me. Moments when danger could have touched my life, yet somehow I was spared.
There were circumstances I could not make sense of at the time, but later I could look back and recognize that God had been at work all along.
He was protecting me even when I was unaware.
He was steering me away from places I should never have gone.
He was sustaining me through hardships that might have overwhelmed me.
Now, when I look back over my life, I can see His goodness threaded through it all.
Through the struggles.
Through the surprises.
Through the hidden, tender moments when I needed His help most.
Even when I could not see His hand, He was still present, watching over me, directing my steps, and meeting my needs with mercy.
So today I want to stop and thank Him from a place of deep gratitude:
Lord, thank You for every unseen rescue, every closed door that spared me harm, and every time Your grace held me up when I did not have the strength to stand on my own.

Drought Resilience- This week the Watershed Management Group reported the following information/tips:

Limited rainfall during early spring and extreme heat in March resulted in the Tucson Basin entering Extreme drought status. How can we work together to build a drought-resilient community of people caring for our watershed?

During these dry times, here are some simple measures you can take at home or in your neighborhood:
- Set up and regularly refill an outdoor wildlife drinker (e.g., a clay or metal bowl) to provide water for birds, lizards, insects, coyotes, and javelinas.
- Install inexpensive low-flow aerators on your kitchen and bathroom sinks to cut your sink water use in half.
- Consider giving your rain garden's native trees and shrubs some extra water 1-2x a month until the monsoon season starts.

Visit the Santa Cruz Watershed Collaborative's dashboard to stay informed about conditions in our marea.

In 2024, The Santa Cruz Watershed Collaborative initiated a three-year local drought planning effort in partnership with SCWC Partners, project collaborators, and regional stakeholders to develop a coordination blueprint to create resilience.

Stephen Ministry Corner: A Prayer for Tomorrow

Lord, I do not know what tomorrow will bring, but I know You will already be there when it arrives.
There are moments ahead I cannot see yet, conversations I have not prepared for, and turns in the road that my mind keeps trying to figure out before I reach them.
Sometimes that uncertainty makes my heart restless.
My thoughts run ahead of me, imagining problems before they exist and carrying worries that belong to a day that has not even come yet.
But You gently remind me that I was never meant to walk into tomorrow alone.
You are already standing in every moment that waits ahead of me.
Already holding the strength I will need.
Already steady where my steps may feel unsure.
So when my mind tries to race forward and steal the peace of today, draw me back to trust.
Teach me that my security is not in knowing every detail, but in believing the One who
guides my life.
I may not know what tomorrow holds, but I know the One who holds tomorrow.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

We are changing how we schedule things:

Due to the increased use of our facility (16 hours a day, 7 days a week) we have contracted with a ministry administrator to help manage our scheduling. All groups currently on the church calendar will not experience any change unless their group needs to stop meeting or change their schedule. However, we are asking all church members to please make sure they schedule new events with our new scheduler. If you want space for a church class, event, or to use our facility for rehearsal or for a meeting that is not already on the calendar (meaning you haven’t talked to Candi about reserving a space), please contact our new scheduler, Faith Milam. You can send her a message through email at [email protected] or call and leave a message (phone number available in The Channel). Thank you!

A word about voting at Church Conference

All United Methodist Church Conferences, from our international General Conference to the local Charge/All Church Conference, require people to be present either in person or online to register a vote. Why? Because our practice of faith is rooted in the belief that being Christian happens in community with one another. We believe that discernment, discussion, and decision-making are guided by the Holy Spirit and should take place within conferencing settings that allow people to gather together in-person and online. Because of this, the church Discipline does not offer a way for people to vote by mail at any level of our system when it comes to decisions made through conferenceing. There will not be a vote-by-mail option for the church conference happening on May 31st, after church. If you wish to register a vote on our resolution to adopt the Simplified Accountability Structure, you must:

- Be a member of Christ Church United Methodist
- Either come to church that day or attend online.
- Zoom link is available on our website.

Unfortunately, Zoom does not offer a fully anonymous voting option. The moderators of the Zoom session will be able to see how you vote if you vote by Zoom. If there is more than one voting member in your household and you attend by Zoom, you must each be logged into a different device to register your vote. This can be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Our moderators will maintain strict confidence about what information they see. We will be voting by ballot at the church - these will be fully anonymous.

The result of the vote will be announced at the conference once the count is in, so that the decision is known by the entire community immediately.

TIPS FROM UMC CREATION JUSTICE FOR MAY 2026: LOVING NATURE

- Immerse yourself in nature. Try forest bathing (using all your senses to connect to your environment), hiking, enjoying a park, hunting for waterfalls and wildflowers, going to a botanical garden or arboretum, getting out on the water in a sailboat, kayak, or canoe. Renew your commitment to care for the nature that renews you.
-Lead the next generation to love nature. Create a scavenger hunt or play I Spy that is age-appropriate for your children, grandchildren, or neighborhood children. Invite them to observe and wonder. Add a sketch pad and colored pencils or allow them to use phone cameras to document their treasures from the day. Talk about God’s call to us to take care of creation.
- Pick up litter. Take a walk in a park. With a bag and gloves, where you see litter, pick it up and dump it in available trash cans. Other people may see your actions and be prompted to care for their own rubbish or perhaps join your efforts.
- Leave no trace. Have a picnic and then be sure to clean up all leftovers or debris. Pack it in/pack it out. Take your trash home with you. Before you leave, challenge children to see if they can find any indication that someone was there. Teach by example.
- Walk on established pathways—concrete, asphalt, wood chip trails. Staying on the path keeps green areas green. Remind children that the green spaces are home to critters who are God’s creation too and deserve our respect.
Protect wildlife. Microplastics from degraded discards like plastic bottles and bags are ingested by birds and other animals, which endangers them. Prioritize removal of plastics from parks and other public areas.
- Adopt a park. Visit it frequently. Attend special events at the park, such as fairs, concerts, and play performances, and stay to help clean up after. Report any damage to nature, tripping hazards, or other dangerous conditions to the park office.
- Join a “Friends of […]” group in support of your favorite park or trail. Work together to clean up or shore up the conditions, including trail building or repair, pulling invasive plants, removing trash. Or volunteer as a Sunday school class or congregation for a workday on behalf of God’s creation.
- Take advantage of nature on the church’s property. Create a space for outdoor worship or for exploring the environment close at hand. One church used their trail through the woods on their property as a special learning and prayer place.
- Advocate for more trees and pocket parks. No matter how small, as air temperatures rise, a green oasis can be a source of cool and community, keeping tempers down and bringing people together as neighbors. Speak up to local decision makers.
