We are so excited to announce that our rescue horse River has been adopted! A huge thank you and congratulations to the Roth family!

River arrived at SSRC in September of 2024 following a tumultuous start to his life. He raced at Turf Paradise, was sold for a career off the track, abandoned at a boarding facility, and then became gravely ill. River was lucky that the owner of the barn financed his hospitalization and treatment and cared for him until SSRC accepted him into our rescue program.

Our plan was to retrain River as a hunter/jumper then adopt him out. However, due to several physical issues, River is not sound enough for a riding career. It can be difficult to place young, exuberant, unrideable horses in appropriate homes. There is little demand for companion horses and even less for unsound horses that require more knowledgeable care and handling. SSRC is never in a rush to place a horse. Our goal is always to find the right home, and a horse stays with us until we find that home. River was with SSRC for almost two years before the perfect family found him.

River just arrived in Colorado where he will enjoy cool temperatures, lots of acreage, and equine buddies! His life might have started out rough, but he has just hit the jackpot. We are extremely grateful to the Roth family for seeing how fun and sweet River is and valuing him for the gorgeous, funny, mare-whispering goofball that he is. Enjoy your well-deserved wonderful life, River!

SSRC’s mission is to make horses more accessible to the public. Offering lessons on school horses, so riders don’t have the expense of purchasing a horse, is one way we accomplish this mission. SSRC has a large herd of safe, knowledgeable school horses from beginner to more advanced. But finding, managing, and maintaining the herd is not easy. We’re always excited when we find a horse that we feel will benefit our students and be happy in our program.

Meet Cocoa Pebbles! Pebbles is a western-trained pony who has recently joined our herd. She’s currently in training and being ridden by a select group of students as she learns her new job. Pebbles is incredibly sweet and smart. Students love her smooth gaits and inquisitive nature. We’re excited to see Pebbles progress and for riders to love and enjoy her. Here’s Riven Brooks showing off Pebbles’ beautiful canter. What a great pair!

We’re so excited to host the Freedom Run schooling show this weekend. We hope it’s the first of many fun shows.

Thanks to our amazing donors, SSRC has invested in a new tractor and a water trailer! This equipment will allow us to better maintain our facility, especially the arena footing. With improved footing, not only will our horses be happier and healthier, but we will be able to offer more services to the community.

Next month’s Freedom Run schooling show will be our first community horse show. In the future, we hope to continue offering affordable, local showing opportunities. Let’s keep the horse community inclusive, thriving, and fun!

Thank you so much to our donors for supporting our mission!

Scout Klingonsmith started riding at SSRC in 2022. Scout has tremendous talent and passion for working with and riding horses, and she has progressed from her first lesson on the lunge line to cantering and jumping cross rails. While talent is helpful in riding, hard work and perseverance are often more accurate indicators of success, and Scout shines in these areas too. In addition to riding multiple times per week, Scout also volunteers once a week mucking stalls, tacking horses, scrubbing waters, and happily doing any task, no matter how challenging. Scout is willing to work hard around the barn, absorb information, and help and teach others, and these are the most important qualities in a horse person and rider. We are so thrilled to have Scout as part of the SSRC family. Here are her parents Amanda and Levi’s thoughts about Scout’s horse journey:

“At Steady Strides Riding Center, we love watching young riders grow not just in the saddle, but in who they become.

Scout is a wonderful example of that growth. As both a rider and a helper around the barn, she has continued to step up, work hard, and take pride in being part of the daily rhythm here. From caring for the horses, to helping where needed, she has grown into someone who is more confident, more capable, and more willing to take charge.

It has been special to watch her develop a stronger voice, a leadership mindset, and the kind of quiet confidence that comes from responsibility, consistency, and heart. We are proud of the young lady she is becoming and grateful to have her as part of the Steady Strides family.

Keep growing, Scout. We see you, and we are proud of you.”
