You may have seen posts celebrating the US Centers for Disease Control’s recent validation of chronic Lyme disease.

Its new ‘Emerging Infectious Diseases supplement on Infection-Associated Chronic Conditions and Illnesses (IACCIs)’
finally acknowledges that persistent symptoms after Lyme infection are real, medically significant, and part of a broader category of infection-associated chronic illnesses.

That is progress! 🙌 👍

The CDC supplement lists possible mechanisms behind these long-lasting symptoms, including:

👉🏼 continued immune activation,
👉🏼 autoimmune processes,
👉🏼 microbiome disruption,
👉🏼 persistent tissue damage,
👉🏼 disrupted coagulation and nerve signalling, and even the possibility of “continued infection in a sequestered site.”

But a closer look at what this means for patients reveals that:

1. Persistent systemic infection has NOT been endorsed as the cause of chronic Lyme symptoms.

2. The IACCI framework does NOT provide new treatment recommendations.
It’s descriptive and research-focused and does NOT change clinical guidance or suggest new treatment pathways for chronic Lyme patients.

3. The CDC’s Lyme disease webpages have NOT changed. They still use Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) and STILL caution against long-term or repeated antibiotic therapy without clear evidence of ongoing infection. Chronic stealth infections are just that - hard to establish with standard testing methods.

4. Recognition is not the same as reform.
This will not improve patients’ access to medical treatment for chronic Lyme disease.

Lyme patients need doctors to be able to access innovative laboratory testing; to be allowed to collaborate with experienced colleagues worldwide, and to explore a range of evidence-based treatment options with their patients.

A Dangerous Stage

Tick season is in full swing, with ticks in the young nymph stage of their lifecycle, when they are small and hard to spot and thus more likely to pass on dangerous diseases. For example, in Pennsylvania, tick bites are up 144% compared to last year, and both Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis, a common coinfection, are on the rise. Nymph ticks may be small, but they still pose serious health risks—especially since not everyone gets a rash, let alone the classic bull’s-eye rash. Staying safe from Lyme and tick-borne infections means dressing smart, using repellents, performing regular checks, and acting quickly if a tick is found.
