Join your friends at Hagood Mill on Saturday, July 20th for a Banjo Extravaganza. This educational event will trace the long history of the banjo from its earliest beginnings as a gourd instrument in Africa to today’s modern-day cousin, which is well recognized. Enjoy the rich history of sounds, songs, and playing styles that have evolved alongside this instrument for hundreds of years. So, if you’ve ever wondered what’s the difference between picking styles such as “claw hammer,” “two-finger,” “three-finger,” or “roll picking,” you need to come to Hagood Mill. Performers include Kora player, Diali Cissokho; Andy Eversole of Banjo Earth; Lilly Anne; Ayden Chappell with Judson Stone; Owen Grooms & Bob Buckingham; and special guest, Chuck Beattie. Lucy Allen will be our host emcee for Banjo Extravaganza 2024.
As always, visitors are encouraged to bring their favorite old-time instruments and join in the open jams, which take place at various locations around the site throughout the day.
Admission on Saturday is $5.00 per person which includes access to the Hagood Mill Historic Site as well as to the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site. All proceeds from admission help offset the costs at Hagood Mill. Children 9 and under are free and there are no parking fees. Gates will open at 10 am.
There will be food and craft vendors onsite throughout the day, so bring a little extra cash.
There will be lots of other things to see on July 20th as Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folk-life and traditional-arts demonstrations. There will be blacksmithing, chair-caning, wood working, pottery, quilting, spinning, looming, knitting, metalsmithing, leatherworking demonstrations and more! You can also ask questions of the artists and make a purchase of their traditional art to take home.
The centerpiece of the Hagood Mill Historic Site is the water-powered 1845 gristmill. It is one of the finest examples of nineteenth century technology in the Upcountry and operates just as it has for the last century and a half. The mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground cornmeal and grits will be available for sale. Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill-related products will also be available.
So, pack up the car, head on out, and don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
The Hagood Mill Historic Site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. year-round. The Mill operates, rain or shine, on the third Saturday of every month.
