Isabella Tree lives with her husband Charlie Burrell in West Sussex amid what she terms “a pioneering rewilding project.” Together, they have helped jumpstart a “rewilding revolution” in Britain. What does that look like? For Isabella and Charlie, it means farming. Isabella knows that human society continues to pour pesticides into natural ecosystems. She seeks to eliminate these environmental hazards and cultivate wildlife in her own backyard. Isabella hopes we can all start to notice living things more often. “Wilding,” a UK documentary film based on her book “Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm,” will be released in several European countries this summer.

You might recognize NFL player Brian Dawkins as the former defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles. But now Dawkins’s days are filled with other pursuits like volunteering at the West Philadelphia Boys and Girls Club. Dawkins is motivated to do great things by his faith. In the “Faith on the Field” podcast, he said he cherished a relationship with Jesus and that prayer is one of his “number one” activities. He puts his faith and resources into action through his Impact Foundation, which supports single-parent families and helps young people in areas of self-awareness, education, self-discipline, and accountability.

It was a tough start to 2022 for individuals and families impacted by the Bronx apartment fires of January 9th. Fatima Wood and her two children found themselves trying to evacuate their 19-story apartment building. The flames spread, and smoke was billowing upward. A neighbor they had never met before — Mahamed Keita — came upon them on the ninth floor and decided to help. Keita took Wood’s three-year-old daughter down the rest of the way, but she was in bad shape by the time they got out of the building. The little girl and this “Good Samaritan” were loaded into an ambulance and rushed to the hospital, where Wood was later reunited with her daughter. Keita said, “I was just trying to do the right thing.”

Kai Xue, age 13, is one of only 21 people worldwide known to have WILD syndrome, a disease that harms cells, causes tissue swelling and warts, and triggers infections. Not a pleasant business! If that wasn’t bad enough, Kai was also diagnosed with severe chylous ascites, a serious illness that resulted in 28 liters of lymphatic fluid collecting in her abdomen. After more than a decade of searching, Kai’s family found a team of physicians, including Dr. Mona Mossad, who successfully diagnosed her condition. Following two detailed and specialized procedures, they were able to repair a leak in the girl’s liver, explaining the buildup of fluid. The doctors were excited at her recovery, especially since she was the first child to receive this type of treatment.

In 1978, high school science teacher Patrick Moriarty informed his students about what happens during a solar eclipse. Together, they observed when future eclipses would be visible from their hometown — Rochester, New York. “Hey, circle that one on April 8th, 2024,” Moriarty told his pupils. “We’re going to get together on that one.” A chuckle rippled through the classroom, but all these years later, Moriarty proved good to his word. With some help from a Facebook group, on the date of the total solar eclipse, Moriarty was joined by a host of former students. The 68-year-old got a local pizzeria to cater and bought 130 pairs of eclipse glasses. “When teachers go into education, they hope that they can be that kind of teacher that would have an impact on people and make a difference for people,” Moriarty said. “And…I guess I did okay.”

After working side by side for three years at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, Air Force Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala and a German Shepherd named John were separated. While his duties called Alcala to another post, his bomb-detecting canine friend would not understand this change. But Alcala promised he’d return for John. Following eight years of active duty, the German shepherd was relieved and fulfilled his old friend’s dream: he came home with Mike Alcala and his family. It was a tender and meaningful reunion. “I trust him with everything I have and with my life,” the sergeant said. “You have to, because these are our partners.” His wife Brittany added, “I instantly trusted John with his life.”

Wissal al-Jaber, age 16, and her friend Ola al-Khalaf, age 17, are two of some 40,000 refugees living in close quarters at the Shatila camp in south Beruit. Many of the young women here eagerly use any open spaces to play sports — not for mere escapism but for the joy of playing. These are teenagers who have had to grow up too quickly. Wissal and Ola were raised in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, where Isis militants frequently killed their neighbors. They were well acquainted with violence from an early age. They found safety in the Shatila camp, an initiative of the Alsama Project, an NGO helping to educate and empower refugees. The girls, in particular, says one of the Alsama founders, “know education is a privilege, not a chore.” Now Wissal and Ola play cricket, a sport that has helped boost the refugee kids’ sense of competition and teamwork. Wissal says, “Cricket helped me build my personality. I learned to speak up.”

Born on this day in 1828, Henri Dunant was a man of life-long Christian convictions. His humanitarian beliefs led him to help those he knew were in need. At the Battle of Solferino, Dunant helped mobilize special aid services for the wounded soldiers. He helped found the Red Cross and an early chapter of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). He also organized the Geneva Conventions of 1863 and 1864. Together with Frederic Passy, Dunant was the co-winner of the inaugural Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

Some of us grown-ups might have casual Fridays, but one third-grader, James Ramage of Maine, has introduced “Dapper Wednesdays” at his school, Chelsea Elementary. He started wearing his best clothes, colorful suits and ties, to school as an expression of who he was. It caught on, and other kids started dressing up. “People absolutely love it,” says one of James’s classmates. The elementary school even started a “Dapper Closet” supplied with donated duds available for any student who would like to take part in Dapper Wednesdays. It just goes to show that you can make a big change no matter your age.

Laura Mazza, known as “Mum on the Run” on Facebook, has struggled for a long time with her postpartum self-image. She bemoaned the way her body was altered from the process of giving birth. Her body changed in all the wrong ways in the most unflattering places, while her husband has stayed the same. With eyes wet with tears, she told her husband her body wasn’t the same as the one he’d fallen in love with years before. She was scared he might not love HER anymore. But Laura’s husband responded, “It’s a body that grew our children, it fed our children, it comforted our children, it made life. Your body is the one I fall in love with every day.” Bringing new life into the world is beautiful, and each life never loses its own beauty.

In a forest in Millburn, New Jersey, numerous little fairy cottages are comfortably tucked away along the Rahway Trail. These decorative domiciles dotting the branches of the trees are the brainchild of Therese Ojibway. A decade ago, Therese wanted to offer a safe and fun outdoor adventure to her son who has autism. So she placed signs of fairy activity along the trail for him to find. From humble beginnings, the miniature homes blossomed into a larger project that now benefits from the talents of multiple volunteers. You can visit the South Mountain Conservancy and walk what is now known as “the Fairy Trail.”
