Friends of the Santa Cruz River

Friends of the Santa Cruz River FOSCR’s mission is to ensure a continued flow of the river’s surface waters and to protect the diversity of life it supports.

Welcome to Friends of the Santa Cruz River (FOSCR)! FOSCR was formed in 1991 to “ensure a continued flow of the river’s surface waters, promote the highest river water quality achievable, and to protect and restore the riparian ecosystem and diversity of life supported by the river’s waters.” Our non-profit, all-volunteer group focuses on the portion of the river from its headwaters in the San Raf

ael Valley in Arizona, south into Mexico, and then north to through Santa Cruz County, AZ to the Pima County line. We work with riverside landowners, government agencies, and other citizens and community groups to keep the river flowing, its banks clean and green, and its environment bountiful to both wildlife and people. The river has no water or land rights. So it is up to us, who care about its survival, to advocate for it, to be a voice for the Santa Cruz. The more of us there are, the stronger is that voice!

Catch up on the last month, from our objection to the USFS's approval of the Hermosa project, to our recruitment of a new team member at PARA.

🚨 We’ve officially filed our objection to the USFS Hermosa Mine approval.

15 environmental groups are calling out major legal and environmental failures in the federal review — from threats to our water and wildlife to unaddressed air pollution and public health risks.

Bottom line: the Forest Service is trying to approve a massive mining project without fully understanding its impacts.

This fight is about protecting southern Arizona’s water, communities, and wild places — now and for future generations.

📢 We’re calling on the Forest Service to withdraw the approval and conduct a full, lawful review.

We are preparing a summary of our objections and will share that soon. In the meantime, read our full objection letter at 👉 bit.ly/para-feis-letter

Tubac Nature Center speaker series: Wed, April 8 , Tubac Community Center
Presentation: "The Geometry of Birding"

If birding is your lifelong passion, or even just an enjoyable hobby, you know that it grows with a stairstep progression of acquired skills. Sometimes you level out in ability and get frustrated. Peg Abbott of Naturalist Journeys presents a skill session aimed to help you with a new perspective. Within each bird there is a ruler or other tools related to shape that can help you unlock its ID. Learn how the basics of geometry – points, lines, angles, and planes – come together to create shapes. And how comparing the relative proportions of these shapes within a single bird, or between birds in a group or flock, can help you gain that next level to empower your birding skills and passion to grow.
