The entrance of the Pequonnock Trail at Tait Rd has recently added a Big Belly trash and recycling bin.

Thank you Trumbull for following the proper recycling guidelines and only recycling empty, loose items.

Recently a group of 6th grade students from Hillcrest Middle School did an excellent job creating climate change projects. One group poignantly proposed solar recycling sorting bins similar to Big Belly as a solution to waste. You can view their video below:

Glad to bring recycling info and fun games made from reusing trash and recyclables to the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center.

Kids and adults played water bottle bowling using empty bottles and old tennis balls plus tic tac toe made from bottle caps and used shoe boxes.

The Beyond the Bin monthly recycling drive also accepts many other items that are typically too small or unacceptable in mixed recycling.

If an item is smaller than 2 inches, it can’t be recycled in your curbside mixed recycling but it MAY be accepted with our Beyond the Bin program.

According to CT DEEP’s 2023 Solid Waste & Diversion Report, 1.2 million tons of waste in CT in 2023 was diverted from disposal. Of that, 41% was through mixed recycled items (also referred to as single stream or curbside) and 23% was via additional recycling programs such as textiles, mattresses, electronics, tires, and plastic film.

While 1.2 million tons of diversion is great, CT generates nearly 3.5 million tons of waste annually and 1 million tons of waste that we can’t handle in our waste to energy facilities, forcing us to truck this waste to out of state landfills. It’s a costly waste of resources and bad for the environment.

Bottom line, recycling additional materials helps! Check out the many recycling options available in Trumbull. https://www.trumbull-ct.gov/275/Transfer-Station-Recycling-Center
