🏆 Extreme First Place: The Bionic Leaf
Congratulations to Arya Gurumukhi, creator of The Bionic Leaf, for earning First Place in the Extreme Division of the 2026 Shane McConkey EcoChallenge.
Inspired by the widespread power outages during the 2021 Texas winter storm, Arya set out to address two interconnected global challenges: energy insecurity and climate change.
After more than two years of research and development, she created The Bionic Leaf—an innovative renewable energy system that mimics photosynthesis by using sunlight, water, catalysts, and bacteria to produce clean liquid fuel. Designed to integrate with existing fuel infrastructure, the technology offers a promising approach to providing affordable, low-maintenance energy solutions for underserved communities.
The project's impact includes:
• A working prototype refined through more than 100 design iterations
• Pilot testing in 15+ communities
• STEM workshops reaching more than 3,000 students and community members
• A renewable fuel system designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while increasing access to stable energy
What makes The Bionic Leaf particularly compelling is its focus on accessibility. By creating a system that can work within existing fuel infrastructure while requiring only sunlight and water as primary inputs, Arya has developed a solution with the potential to expand clean energy access in communities where reliable electricity remains out of reach.
