Today, we join our community in honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day with gratitude and respect for all Indigenous peoples, their rich cultures, living traditions, and contributions. 💛

Here in the Tahoe region, we offer special recognition to the Washoe people, whose ancestral homeland includes Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area. Generations of Washoe families have fished its waters, gathered food and medicines, and cared for this land. That deep connection continues today.

We honor Indigenous elders and the wisdom they share, and celebrate the people keeping their languages, stories, and traditions strong for future generations.

From all of us at Sierra Senior Services, we’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from and celebrate Indigenous histories, cultures, and communities.

We’re closed today, Monday, October 12, and look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

🧠 Today is World Mental Health Day, a day to talk openly about something that touches every family, including our senior neighbors here in Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

Mental health doesn't get easier with age, and for many older adults, it gets harder. Isolation, the loss of a spouse or close friends, chronic health conditions, and even something as ordinary as a long winter can all weigh on a person's mood and outlook. Depression in seniors is common, and it is also often missed, since it can look like fatigue, forgetfulness, or simply "slowing down."

Connection is one of the best tools we have. A weekly visit, a shared meal, or a friendly voice on the phone can make a real difference. That's part of why our Wednesday gatherings matter so much, and why our meal delivery visits are never just about the food. 💛

If you or a senior you love is struggling, please reach out. A conversation with a doctor is a good place to start, and organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offer support and resources as well.

🚗 ⛽ As gas prices increase, the cost of delivering meals rises too.

Last fiscal year, Sierra Senior Services drove 51,526 delivery miles and spent $21,214 on automobile expenses.

Six vehicles in our fleet run on gasoline. SSS covers delivery fuel costs, so our volunteers can give their time without paying for delivery gas themselves.

Reaching seniors across our rural mountain communities means traveling long distances. Higher fuel costs stretch the budget that supports nutritious meals and dependable deliveries.

Every mile brings a meal, a friendly face and a caring check in to a senior who counts on us.
