Last week, members of the JMT Wild team joined nearly 200 conservation leaders at the Sierra Meadows Partnership Annual Gathering in Tahoe City. 🌲

Collaboration with experts from Stanford, UC Davis, UNR, and UC Merced confirmed that JMT Wild’s restoration strategies—focused on watershed health, carbon capture, and Indigenous stewardship—align with the region's leading science.

We also hit the field to see these methods in action! We toured Van Norden Meadow and joined Truckee River Watershed Council at Bear Creek and Martis Creek to see stream channels reconnected to their floodplains.

The best part? Over 50 Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) were installed to kickstart the process, and local beavers moved right in to help raise water levels and expand wet meadow habitats. 🦫

Humans and beavers, restoring together. We left inspired and ready to keep protecting the Sierra Nevada!

When snowpack disappears early, fire season arrives early.

After this year's record-low snowpack, the Sierra Nevada is heading into summer unusually dry. Less snowmelt means less moisture in the soil, drier vegetation, and elevated wildfire risk across the range well before peak season typically begins.
This is where restoration work becomes critical. Restored meadows retain moisture longer into the dry months, slowing the conditions that allow fire to spread. A resilient Sierra Nevada doesn't happen on its own. It requires ongoing care, and people who show up for it.

Before you head out this Memorial Day Weekend, check current fire restrictions at your destination.

Snowpack Update ❄️

This year's Sierra Nevada snowpack told a sobering story. After a record-hot March, the statewide snowpack dropped to just 18% of average, the second-worst snow drought in 50 years.

The Sierra Nevada snowpack supplies roughly 30% of California's water needs. When it disappears too fast, as it did this spring, rivers, streams, and the meadows that depend on slow, steady snowmelt feel this impact first.

This is exactly why our work matters. Healthy montane meadows act as natural sponges, holding snowmelt in the landscape longer and releasing it slowly through the dry summer months. When meadows are degraded, water moves through too quickly and is lost. When they are restored, that water stays in the system, benefiting wildlife, downstream communities, and the broader watershed.
