And so it begins....
BEAR League, along with CA DFW and NDOW, have been very concerned about the enormous amount of snow that is too slowly melting around Tahoe, because we knew this was going to be an unprecedented problem for the bears....and therefore, the humans.
Normally, in the spring, the bears eat the young sprouting vegetation as it pops up when the snow disappears and the warm sun draws forth these grasses and tasty, tender, young plants. That's not happening yet.
We worried that Tahoe bears would then be forced to head to lower elevations to find something to eat because the 'pickings are slim' up here.
And, yes, indeed, that's what many of them have done.
We know this because we are getting constant phone calls from the foothills, in all directions, from un-bear-aware people who are not accustomed to seeing these very large and somewhat scary-looking food-thieves in their yards.
These nice, unwary folks unknowingly put trash out, have bird-feeders in their yards, don't lock their kitchen doors, leave food in cars etc etc. So the bears are scoring big time! The people at Tahoe basically know better--we learned the hard way--but the folks 'off the hill' aren't prepared for this so the short trip downhill has been very worth it for the bears.
They are scoring...
They will want to stay...
Tell them the party is over...
Lock up the Trash...
Remove your bird-feeders...
Be prepared...
Call us for advice...
Send them back home...
If you ignore this warning then get ready for some huge new 'best friends', whether you like them or not.
Call us, we'll do our best to help. But remember, the bears don't listen to us or do what we tell them to do, they follow the food trail instead.
