🔥 PROTECTING WHAT KEEPS GOOD FIRE MOVING 🔥

As the Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada threatened the area around our storage facility, Engine Boss Lynda Cole saw the potential problem and took action.

Our facility stores much of the equipment we rely on for prescribed fire operations and training—pumps, hose, PPE, firing equipment, and other critical gear.

Lynda took it upon herself to set up a hose lay, prep the facility, and make sure we were ready if the fire pushed our direction. 💧🔥

That’s Engine Boss leadership: recognize the threat, make a plan, and get to work.

A huge thank you to Lynda for looking after the equipment that helps us train firefighters and put more good fire on the ground.

Good leadership doesn’t always wait for an assignment. Sometimes you just see what needs to be done and do it.

🔥 REAL-WORLD TRAINING | TALBOT FIRE 🔥

Another wildfire assignment and another opportunity to turn training into real-world experience.

Folks from the Good Fire Training Network (GFTN) and Fire Support Unlimited (FSU) recently worked together on the Talbot Fire on the Tahoe National Forest, providing firefighters and trainees the opportunity to gain meaningful experience on an active wildfire assignment.

The Good Fire Training Network is a program of the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, focused on expanding access to training, mentorship, and real-world experience for wildland and prescribed fire practitioners.

Working with partners like Fire Support Unlimited, we’re helping create a pathway from training → task books → real-world assignments → qualified firefighters.

It’s not just about filling seats on an engine. It’s about giving people the opportunity to work alongside experienced firefighters, complete task book assignments, build confidence, and develop the skills needed to move forward in wildland fire.

🔥 TRAIN TODAY. WORK TOMORROW. 🔥

That’s what Beneficial Fire Training is all about.

Through a partnership between the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation (HFA), Fire Support Unlimited (FSU), and the Good Fire Training Network, participants completed S-211: Portable Pumps and Water Use—building hands-on skills with pumps, hose lays, water delivery, and fireline pumping operations.

Then came the part that matters:

🎓 Training one day.
🔥 Working the next.

Right after the course, participants headed out on assignment to the Aspen Acres Fire in Colorado, where they put that training directly to work—setting up, operating, and maintaining multiple pumping platforms in real wildfire conditions.

No waiting months hoping for an opportunity to use what you learned.

Learn it. Practice it. Deploy with it.

That’s the model we’re building: training connected directly to experience, mentorship, qualifications, and real-world wildfire assignments.

🔥 WILDFIRE TRAINING ASSIGNMENTS — NOW RECRUITING 🔥

Ready to get off the sidelines and gain real wildfire experience?

The Good Fire Training Network is looking for:

🚒 Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) Trainees
🔥 Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) personnel interested in going out on wildfire assignments with our network.

These assignments are an opportunity to build experience, work alongside experienced wildland firefighters, and for FFT1 trainees, get meaningful opportunities to work toward completing your task book.

Minimum Requirements:
🥾 Current RT-130 Annual Fireline Safety Refresher
💪 Current WCT / Pack Test
🔥 Ready and available for wildfire assignments
🚐 Willing to travel when opportunities become available

We’re especially interested in prescribed fire practitioners and others who have struggled to find opportunities to gain wildfire experience or advance their qualifications.

The Good Fire Training Network, a program of the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation, in partnership with the Iowa Hill Prescribed Burn Association, is offering FREE S-130 Firefighter Skills Days for residents of Amador, El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada Counties.

These hands-on field days are designed to help community members complete the practical skills portion of S-130 Firefighter Training and build the next generation of local prescribed fire and wildfire response capacity within emerging Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs).
