We work for the watershed. It's our nature. Our work is multifaceted. Part science: assessing and monitoring the biology, geology, and hydrology of each project. Part management: pulling together agencies, consultants and contractors needed to get the job done. And part funding: finding the grants, foundations and donors needed to finance these ambitious multi-year efforts. Finally, it's getting t

he word out: educating locals, visitors and downstream water-users about our stressed and endangered eco-system. By managing large-scale restoration projects, influencing emerging policies to mitigate risk, and engaging people from all age, interest and economic backgrounds, we work to make the watershed more resilient, sustainable and alive.

Did you know that the northwestern willow flycatchers that call our watershed home are seriously threatened?

🍃Habitat loss and degradation throughout the Truckee-Tahoe area have driven these feathered friends' population to steadily decline. TRWC is working hard to restore our watershed and, with it, healthy habitat for all our feathered friends.

🌞Want to see for yourself? Join us THIS FRIDAY at Coldstream Canyon for a guided tour of two decades of TRWC restoration work.

TRWC is deeply thankful for the supporters, funders, and partners that enable us to have a true impact on the health and wellbeing of our Truckee River watershed.

This month, we'd like to thank Sierra Nevada Conservancy, The Martis Fund, California Water Boards, and U.S. Forest Service for their ongoing support of our restoration work.

🌎Today is the 43rd annual World Environment Day.

Originally established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, this day has centered a variety of specific themes and objectives throughout the years. Some such themes include plastic pollution, habitat restoration, food waste, air pollution, illegal wildlife trade, and responsible consumerism.

🌤️The theme for 2026? Climate change.

It's a big one, and will require solutions of all shapes and sizes. TRWC is doing our part by restoring our local meadows and wetlands that help our community mitigate (and adapt to) the effects of climate change.

🌿Did you know that healthy Sierra Nevada meadows act as carbon sinks?

Per acre, the amount of carbon thriving meadow ecosystems capture is on par with tropical rainforests. But when they're water-starved, bare, and populated with dry-soil species... these same areas begin to release carbon into the atmosphere. By restoring our watershed's meadows and wetlands, TRWC is ensuring that our ecosystem is healthy, thriving, and helping us stand resilient against the effects of climate change.

To that, we say happy World Environment Day!

Our first nature journaling event with Troy Corliss was a great success – art was made, laughter shared, coyotes spotted, and beavers celebrated! Oh, and we learned a fair bit too 😉 Don’t forget to sign up for our upcoming sessions… only two more are on the books! Link in bio.

From behalf of all of us at TRWC, happy Pride Month!

EVERYONE belongs in the outdoors, and that includes our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and allies. Our work here at TRWC is centered on the Middle Truckee River watershed, and our team functions like a well-saturated wetland. But we also understand that our work is connected to past, present, and future stewards also working to protect this place—and others—that we call home.

Many of those stewards are also members of the LGBTQ+ community, and bring their unique identities and perspective to the environmental movement. (Rachel Carson, Audre Lorde, New York's "Trees for Queens" group, and Elke Mackenzie, to name a few.)

If you'd like to learn more about how q***r ecology and intersectional environmentalism connect to our work, let us know in the comments below! You can also check out the work of LGBTQ+ environmentalists like Pattie Gonia and Q***r Brown Vegan to learn more.

Did someone say dissolved oxygen?!? Come along to see what Snapshot Day is all about!

Citizen science is a great way to get out in the sunshine and help steward our precious Truckee River Watershed. Each year, folks of all ages and experience come out to help collect water quality data around our watershed, pulling data for a single snapshot in time. Then, throughout the Summer and Fall, many volunteers come back out to continue their efforts at TRWC's Adopt-A-Stream monitoring sites.

Follow along to learn more, and leave any questions in the comments below!
