🌲💪 Caring for our watershed means caring for the land around it.

As part of Truckee River Day, hosted by Truckee River Watershed Council, SWEP partnered with Truckee Fire Protection District to lead a hands-on restoration project near the Sierra College campus.

Volunteers worked on defensible space and cleared lodgepole pines encroaching on Donner Creek. This work helps reduce wildfire risk, supports healthier forest conditions, and gives riparian vegetation along the creek more room to thrive.

A special shout-out to the high school Envirolution students who joined the effort! We love seeing young people roll up their sleeves and make a difference in their own community. 💚

Thank you to Truckee River Watershed Council for bringing our community together, Truckee Fire Protection District for partnering with us, and everyone who came out to put stewardship into action!

💙 What a day for our watershed!

A huge thank-you to everyone who came out for the 31st Annual Truckee River Day & Fair! Despite a last-minute location change, our community showed up to celebrate the Truckee River and the places we all call home.

Days like these are a reminder of what makes this community so special: people coming together to care for the environment, learn from one another, and make a difference right here at home. 🌿

Thank you to Truckee River Watershed Council, all the event partners and volunteers, and everyone who helped make this year’s celebration a success!

We’re grateful to be part of a community that cares. 💚

🌲🔥 The lessons that stick are the ones we share.

Seeing students take pride in what they’ve learned and share it with others is a wonderful reminder that small actions can make a real difference.

Third graders at Truckee Elementary created a bulletin board to share their takeaways from Defensible Space Stewardship Day. They’re spreading the word about protecting homes from wildfire, caring for our forests, and looking out for their neighbors.

These kids are already doing their part to help keep our community safer!

🌲 What happens when students get the chance to make a real difference?

At our recent Defensible Space Stewardship Day with Truckee Elementary, students rolled up their sleeves and helped create safer, more fire-resilient spaces in our community.

One parent shared this with us afterward:

“THANK YOU for organizing such an amazing experience for our students. My daughter was super excited and proud to have helped an elderly couple with their defensible space. She talked about it more than she's ever shared around school. Please send this along to the team, you all make a huge impact and difference in our children's lives.”

This is why we do what we do. Students aren’t just learning about wildfire preparedness — they’re putting that knowledge into action, helping their neighbors, and seeing firsthand that their work matters.

We’re so grateful to the Truckee Elementary students, teachers, families, and the Truckee Fire Protection District team who made the day such a success. ❤️

Action fosters hope. 🌲

🌱 Ever made a seed bomb?

During Wonders of Watersheds at Kings Beach Elementary, students made seed bombs using native seeds. Seed bombs are a simple way to help native plants get established — just toss one onto a patch of soil, give it some water, and let nature take it from there!

Native plants are adapted to our local climate and provide important food and habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. They also help support healthy soil and watersheds.

A little seed, a little soil, and a lot of potential! 🌿💧

What’s living in the water?

Kings Beach Elementary students explored Sagehen Creek at Sagehen Field Station, looking for macroinvertebrates and learning what these tiny aquatic creatures can tell us about the health of a stream.

They also practiced water quality monitoring, observing both the physical and biological characteristics of Sagehen Creek.

Tiny creatures, big clues. 💧🔎

💧 SWEP in the classroom!

We loved having SWEP Board Member Parisa Nodehi join us at Glenshire Elementary for Wonders of Watersheds! Parisa stepped into the classroom to support our programming and engage with students as they learned about Tahoe’s native trout species, the Lahontan cutthroat trout, and created native fish art through hands-on learning.

We’re grateful to have board members who don’t just support SWEP from the boardroom, but show up in our classrooms and alongside our students. 💙🌲

Thank you, Parisa, for being part of the learning!
