The Truckee River Chapter of Trout Unlimited has been stewarding and restoring our beloved river since its inception 2010.
In addition to numerous volunteer events including youth camps, river cleanups, and native plantings, we are also proud to have completed three large scale habitat improvement projects.
In 2017 we set our sights on the Little Truckee River working with partners, including the United States Forest Service to augment the stream with large woody debris. Then in 2019, we completed the Horners Corner Habitat Enhancement Project, creating durable structure in a reach that had been previously stripped of large boulders.
We are proud to announce that the Glenshire Habitat Enhancement Project, constructed in 2020, has officially closed out all permit following several years of intensive monitoring to track effectiveness.
This section of the Truckee River along the Glenshire Road was degraded from the historical ice making just upstream during the late 1800s and early 1900s. . As a result of the ice making considerable sediment was released into the River resulting in hard river bottom with little diversity and fish habitat.
The Project added three W weirs, several J hook weirs and numerous fish habitat boulders along the 800 foot length of the Enhancement Project. The Project included both pre and post construction fish snorkel surveys and BMI surveys (bugs). We are excited to report the both fish and bug populations have improved.
