Our fifth principle of Bushidō is Compassion (仁, Jin)

Jin represents the understanding that true strength exists not merely in the ability to destroy, but in the ability to protect, uplift, and show mercy when appropriate.

A warrior possesses power. Jin governs how that power is used.

Without compassion, courage can become recklessness, loyalty can become blind obedience, and honor can become arrogance. Jin tempers the other virtues by reminding the warrior that all people share common humanity.

May the 4th be with you!

In honor of our favorite pop-culture holiday, we wanted to give a shoutout to one of the coolest and most "samurai-like" characters in the star wars universe, "The Ronin". As a part of the Star Wars visions series, this character is a direct influence of samurai culture put within the world of star wars. His debut was heavily influenced by Kurosawa's Yojimbo.

Takeda Shingen 武田 信玄; (1521–1573) was one of the most powerful daimyō of Japan’s Sengoku period, ruling the Kai Province and expanding aggressively into central Japan. He was known as the Tiger of Kai.

Takeda Shingen earned fame as a brilliant military commander and strategist, known for his disciplined cavalry and innovative battlefield tactics. His banner motto, “Fūrinkazan” 風林火山 (“swift as wind, silent as forest, fierce as fire, immovable as mountain”), symbolized his approach to warfare.

He was one of the few who could challenge Oda Nobunaga in his campaign to unifying Japan.

His original name was Takeda Harunobu, however, in 1559, he became a sāmaṇera through his Buddhist studies and was given the dharma name "Shingen".

Samurai History: America and the Samurai.

In 1853–1854, American naval officer Matthew Perry led a U.S. expedition to Japan with a fleet known as the “Black Ships.” His mission was to force Japan to open trade and diplomatic relations after more than two centuries of isolation under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate.

When Perry entered Edo Bay in 1853 with modern steam-powered warships, the technological superiority of Western naval power shocked the Japanese leadership. Unable to militarily resist, the shogunate signed the Treaty of Kanagawa, opening Japanese ports to American ships and beginning Japan’s forced integration into global trade.

Perry's Expedition had profound effects on samurai culture including: the acceleration of the end of the feudal system, the transition of samurai into modern roles within government, and the undermining of the Tokugawa Regime.

This week's samurai movie/series feature is James Clavelle's Shōgun.

Shōgun is a historical fiction drama set in Japan around the year 1600 during the political struggle that preceded the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate. Many of the characters in Shōgun represent real people of the period.

The story follows John Blackthorne [hist. William Adams] (Cosmo Jarvis), an English navigator whose ship wrecks on the coast of Japan. Captured by local authorities, he becomes entangled in the complex political conflict between powerful daimyo.

Blackthorne eventually enters the orbit of Yoshii Toranaga (hist. Tokugawa Ieyasu] (Hiroyuki Sanada), a brilliant and calculating lord who is fighting to survive a conspiracy by rival regents seeking to eliminate him. Recognizing Blackthorne’s knowledge of European politics, naval warfare, and Christianity, Toranaga keeps him alive and gradually elevates him within his household.

A key figure in their alliance is Toda Mariko [hist. Hosokawa Gracia] (Anna Sawai), a noblewoman and translator who bridges the cultural gap between Blackthorne and Japanese society. Through her, Blackthorne begins to understand the strict codes of honor, loyalty, and strategy that shape samurai life.

Fun facts: This series of Shōgun was a remake of its original series produced in 1980, which Toshiro Mifune starred as Yoshi Toronaga.

The show set the record for the most Emma's won in a single season with a total of 18 awards. In addition, it was the first non-English language show to win outstanding drama series.

The katana, in all instances, is treated with respect. Featured here, when our students take their katana off the racks, we always bow to show respect to everything the katana is.

We bow: to respect the journey the katana took to be in our students hands; to respect to the centuries of the teaching that led our students to this place and time to learn this art; to the craftspeople and artisans who designed and devoted their time to creating these beautiful ornate objects imbued with the spirit of samurai ideals; and to respect the dojo in which we train etc.

There is no shortage of respect to be shown for Katana's and Iai.

Its time for another Samurai movie feature! This week we chose The Last Samurai (2003), directed by Edward Zwick.

It is set during Japan’s turbulent Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century. The story follows Nathan Algren (played by Tom Cruise), a disillusioned American military officer hired to train Japan’s modern imperial army. Captured by a group of traditional samurai led by Katsumoto (played by Ken Watanabe), under captivity Algren develops deep respect for their discipline, loyalty, and bushidō ethics. As Japan modernizes and abandons the samurai class in favor of Western industrialization, Katsumoto and his followers rebel against the new government. (Another notable actor who starred in this film was Hiroyuki Sanada seen in the picture)

Although this Jidaigeki was produced by Hollywood, this film is often looked on positively by audiences for its use of Japanese actors, historical consultation, and a modern exploration of the classic industrialization vs traditional discipline theme consistent w/ previous Jidaigeki.
